Your season is on the line. There is no time limit, no batter limit, the only limitation you have on you is the number of outs you are allowed. You have two remaining, after getting two consecutive walks.

Why give away half your season freely?

also why was hader not in for harper? they really botched the end of that game

It's a tough call, if you bring on Hader you pretty much need him to get all 6 outs considering the state of the bullpen, and there isn't a significant LHH until you get back to Schwarber 6 hitters later(though Stott and Marsh are LHH). Suarez was excellent against both righties and lefties this year, and that HR was the first he'd given up to a LHH.

true, but hader had only pitched 1 inning in the nlcs. I thibk you use him for harper and if he can't go 6 outs you take your chances with someone else. the hit from realmuto to start the inning really made things difficult.

I certainly wouldn't have criticized them for doing that. I do get the logic here though, Suarez already got a GIDP in his first matchup against Harper, and trusting him to not get burned over Harper/Castellanos/Bohm and then turning over to Hader for whatever is needed to get to 27 outs from there makes sense to me too.

Also, there is no defensible reason to sac bunt there but also you are setting up Austin Nola as the guy that needs to get a hit to save your season. Nola had a .650 OPS this year and was hitting .053 in the playoffs. It’s not like you had Juan Soto due up.

I guess Melvin was kind of up against it with the hader decision, it would just feel bad as a padres fan to know your dominant reliever didn't get into a 1-run elimination game

And to think under the prior postseason format tge Phillies would have missed the playoffs entirely, effectively eliminated by the Cubs.

Not sure how any Astro pitcher can focus tonight with those massive fake guns popping out of the third row behind the plate

Harper is the goods

that was actually a really good pitch he hit out. 99mph sinking fastball on the outside corner. i guess maybe he wanted it slightly lower, but that's a damn hard pitch to hit out.

I think I read that the last two teams to make it to the WS undefeated in the playoffs both lost. I hope that trend continues.

Yeah the 2014 Royals (L in 7) and 2007 Rockies (swept). They both had to go 8-0 to get to the World Series too as the Royals had to win the Wild Card game and the Rockie had to win a 1 game tiebreaker (not technically a playoff game)

Don’t the Astros have Brantley and Goodrum?

Brantley is on the IL and not on the World Series roster

Goodrum was DFA’d on 9/1

Got it, for some reason I thought Brantley was back and I remember streaming Goodrum in fantasy for a few weeks this year when my team got hit with a bunch of injuries and he was a good add because he qualified for like 4 spots to cover for the injuries. Missed him being DFA’d.
