Uhhhh

What was that playcall? A gimpy Justin Fields running an option? That had zero percent chance of working

Clearly a “don’t eff it up” call

What the hell is this playcalling?

Why play to keep the game 1 possession? What are they doing

Yeah I hated that. I think you're still in very good position but......its so cowardly to play this way. What if you miss the FG? What if they march down the field and tie the game? A touchdown wins the game.

Don't play to not lose

Didn’t expect to win this one so that’s great. But you aren’t going to beat the Packers or some of the other opponents on the schedule being this conservative.

But I’m happy they won

Will be interesting to see how the offensive gameplan changes (or if it changes) against GB. They cannot expect to hold them under 15 points. So far Fields has not had more than 20 pass attempts in a game. I’d expect him to have considerably more next week or better or worse

I don't know, teams are averaging like 4.5/carry against the Pack and it's clearly this team's strength too. Hopefully they find some more downfield shots, but this is probably going to be a low pass attempt team at its best this year and I'm actually okay with that. I think the D is capable of holding the Pack to a few scores.

I just feel like eventually we’re going to be in situations where we can’t play this kind of football and expect to win. This isnt 1998. Plus ultimately I just want to develop fields this year, not give him the 2005 Kyle Orton game plan. I know this is an outlier but look at Herbert coming in and averaging 300 yards per game. Our circumstances are a bit different but playing as conservative as we were today bothers me. Let Fields throw, he’ll make some mistakes but whatever, he’ll learn from them and ultimately both Fields and the Bears will be better for it.

Yea they were too conservative today. But they aren't going to dink and dunk their way to 300 pass yards successfully either. And if the run game is picking up big chunks they just aren't going to get a ton of throws. So just hopefully they are using a big chunk of those throws on big plays.

If they pass 300 yards a game it's because they fell behind early. That's just who they are this year.

I also get that this is a particularly meatbally fanbase whose first instinct is to cheer for 3 yards and a cloud of dust. But this team can run. And to be a run first team in today's game I think you need multiple guys who can do it (or Derrick Henry) , and they actually do!

I just think there’s a clear deviation between how Nagy is handling Fields and how everyone else is handling their rookie QB. For instance here are pass attempts for every rookie QB start this year in order of least to most attempts:

17 - Fields

17 - Fields

20 - Fields

21 - Mills

24 - Lawrence

28 - Mills

29 - Mills

29 - Lance

30 - Jones

30 - Jones

32 - Wilson

33 - Wilson

33 - Lawrence

33 - Lawrence

34 - Lawrence

34 - Wilson

35 - Wilson

37 - Wilson

39 - Jones

40 - Jones

51 - Jones

51 - Lawrence

I know I know, all of those teams are losing or have different styles of play and none of the QBs are exactly excelling but they are giving their QBs opportunities to make plays and learn.

Maybe it’s a ridiculous argument. I admit I might be sounding dumb right now. I just hope and expect Fields to be a QB that is the reason the Bears win games, not a Ryan Tannehill. Plenty of time to get to that point but he’s not being used like that right now.

No, I don't think you sound dumb, I just think that Fields is gonna throw the ball down field really well if he has time and the best way to get there is probably extra blockers which is gonna work out for both big passes and running, and teams aren't probably going to stack the box to stop the run and risk Fields burning them deep.

Also if this D keeps playing bend don't break we may just have less drives. It all kind of seemingly adds up to low passing attempts to me. But it is probably their best chance at winning football.

I don’t expect a radical change to a passing offense but I am hoping for the Bears to take steps in that direction each game as we progress.

It really burns me up that even Mills threw for 300/3 today. Take off the horsefeathers training wheels.

It’s what happens when you are developing a rookie QB but also trying to win to save your job. The Texans have no expectations for winning so horsefeathers it let him loose. I’m not saying the Bears should tank the season or anything but he’s playing conservative because the team is excelling at running the ball and the defense is holding up. And it’s fine to try to win games but winning games and developing Fields should be priority 1 and 1a, but for Nagy it’s 1 and 2 plus he already has a natural conservative mindset

Some good points. And I know you’ve already agreed with me about the playcalling today but it’s the perfect example. Why be so predictable on 3rd and short and let 2 drives die because you running it straight between the tackles? Why run on like 90% of your first downs. Let fields do a little more and maybe we put away that game in the 3rd quarter

Yea, it would probably require a rewatch. Maybe there was a little of the Raiders purposefully taking away the deep game. In which case the running game wasn't actually as good as it looked today.

If at some point a team wants to sell out for the run, I think Fields will burn 'em deep. But I don't think there's anything harmful about Fields development of letting this O take what Ds will give them at this stage.
