Curious if Jake is getting released in the next week or two or if he stays on literally just to be a guy who can take the ball. Steele is likely getting promoted for the next run through the rotation, and Thompson isn't more than one or two turns behind that. So barring an injury two of these three need to happen in the next few weeks:

- Shift to a 6 man rotation

- Jake gets cut

- Alzolay gets shut down

Alzolay is only at 98 innings. I figured they were going to eye 130ish for him so it's probably way too soon for him to get shut down.

Why would they release him? Right now performance isn't the critical thing, it's just whether or not he's giving them innings every five days. If he's getting shelled and only going a couple innings, then he's useless. If he giving them 5, losing is fine.

Why wouldnt you give young arms a chance to start during all these meaningless games we have? If someone is losing a rotation spot at this point its gotta be Jake. That said, they may choose to shut down Alzolay to preserve his innings thrown this year.

They aren't exactly flush with innings eaters or young guys desperate for innings. Remember, they got rid of half the bullpen as well, and need innings to be eaten from top to bottom.

Yeah they need arms, especially arms they don't care about. Pretty much everyone is at or way above what threw last year and we've got 2 months left. 6 man rotation, let Azlolay close in September, be creative. Based on what we know about Jake, wouldn't be surprised to see him stumble into a decent start at Wrigley and then just say he's done.

Do these Schwindel/Fargas/etc characters have any future on this team? If not, why aren’t we trying out some guys that do. There’s no one else close to “ready” that we can put in there? Wisdom, Ortega, Contreras, and Happ seem to be the only guys likely to have any sort of future here. Happ, decreasingly so.

I'm sure the real prospects will be up in September

I think you're going to be disappointed. AAA was (on purpose) stocked with as many Ortegas/Wisdoms as possible. The actual prospects just aren't there yet. Maybe we'll see a few Brennan Davis ABs, but after that, and skipping over all the teenagers, you've got...Chris Morel batting .202 in AA? Miguel Amaya who hasn't played in 2 months? Cole Roederer hitting .230 in high A? We added a lot of hitters, but they still aren't close.
