The 2022 firt rounder is only top 2 protected, then it becomes a 2023 unprotected 1st. Stan better be improving the team more or this could be disastrous.

Yes this is my take I think. It’s a lot to give up IMO and it doesn’t turn the Hawks into a playoff team by itself (maybe if Toews is back to where he was). 3 players make up about 40% of the cap now, is that normal?

How do you pay $9m to a guy that isn’t even a threat to be mvp caliber in this league when you spent a decade trading away quality players because you already blew your cap space on overpaid defenseman?

I'm pretty sure this is the worst move that Stan has made. It's almost like he's deliberately sabotaging the team before he inevitably gets fired.

Second City Hockey…does not like the trade. Also apparently Seth Jones is a pretty big Trump supporter

In related news, the Jones brothers are on their way to Wrigley to throw out the first pitch today. Can’t make this stuff up.

Their dad is Popeye Jones, who I wouldn’t immediately take as a Trump guy (outside of being old and well off)

It’s mind blowing how bad this deal looks. Just total and complete overpay on both ends. A bad team years away from contention and they just ruined any hope of revival by 2025. How do you pay free agency superstar money to a non-free agent and non-superstar at this point in time with a tight cap?

So the Hawks did not qualify Suter and he'll become a free agent. Apparently we're short on cash all of a sudden.

For the life of me I don’t get qualifying the disappointing expensive defensemen and letting the mildly impressive cheaper forward walk.

After qualifying Zadorov, the Hawks have pairings of:

DeHaan - Jones the elder

Zadorov - Murphy

Jones the younger - Stillman

Which leaves no room for Beaudin, Mitchell, Kalynuk, etc. I just don't understand what this organization is doing.

I just don’t get the nuances of NHL roster management but this off-season feels like a late 90s MLB front office working in a 2010s MLB frontier.

I was really expecting the Hawks to work to consolidate the talent through trades this offseason. So sending something like Beaudin + Mitchell + Suter to CBJ for Jones instead of Boqvist & two first round picks. They've got too many okay-to-good players and not enough good-to-great players to get over the hump. To solve that, you can take the patient approach and see what those younger players mature into (but you have to clear the roster to give them space to play and live with the losses). Or you can do some 2-for-1 and 3-for-1 trades to consolidate the talent to expedite things (but have a shorter window). I feel like Stan is trying to do half of each.

Marc Andre Fleury is now a blackhawk.

This roster is going to be a who's who of those who used to be

well apparently they gave up nothing.

and there are rumors he might retire anyway. $7m cap hit if he plays.

I havent really paid attention to him lately. He's had a lot of team success in his career but always seems to be a on shaky ground with his teams. But at the same time he beat out Robin Lehner for the starting job in Vegas so he must be decent still.

I would have rather focused on a younger goalie than waste resources on him but Stan seems to be set on contending immediately or die trying (more likely)

Edit: Didnt realize he won the Vezina last season (even though he was basically benched in the playoffs)

Not sure it makes the Blackhawks that much better, even though Fleury was great last year, but they had some regression coming to their goaltending and this should help that. Still don't think they're anything more than a mediocre team though.

If Fleury reports, the Hawks are down to like $500k before agreeing to contracts with any of the restricted free agents. Goodbye Zadorov (which, awesome), probably DeHaan, Subban, Delia, etc. For one year, maybe of MAF. What are we even doing here.

From my understanding, there is room during the offseason to make moves that put you over the cap You have to be under it once the season starts, but then the LTIR comes into play. Seabrook and Shaw immediately go into LTIR which allows for their salaries to no longer count against the cap, freeing up something like $11 mil.
