I swear to god. You're managing a team with a .387 winning percentage and one of your rookies hits two HRs in the first game back from the all star break, so what do you do? David Ross takes him out of the lineup. That's just crazy horsefeathers to me.

I'd rather Ross play matchups than chase hot streaks. Probably across the board but certainly for a guy who's probably not actually major league ready.

Playing match ups to what end, though? Getting Ortega or Rivas going? They aren't going to sneak into the playoffs.

You are probably right that Velazquez isn't major league ready, but he's a helium guy. As you know, in the AFL he really began changing his trajectory. Seems far more valuable to me to keep throwing him in the fire ala Morel in the hopes that he can keep changing it rather than spreading PAs around to whatever effect.

Removing the HR he hit against a RH position player last night, Velazquez is hitting .200/.243/.257 against RHP, a line worse than Heyward against them. He was hitting .211/.290/.415 w/ a 36% K rate at AAA against all pitchers. He shouldn't be getting any starts against RHP, both to actually get the best out of the team, and for Velazquez's own development since he shouldn't be up to begin with.

He would get absolutely manhandled by Zach Wheeler tonight, and I don't think that helps anybody. Definitely start him every game against lefties, but I'm fine relegating him to bad righties until he shows he's ready for more.

That's a reasonable opinion. I guess I'd just rather he get opportunities in moments when his confidence is likely to be highest.

I'll just say I like Ross and think he's doing a good job. He was legitimately kind of bad in 2020, which is to be expected as a rookie manager. But at this point the stuff people complain about is the same stuff every team's fans complain about. Stuff like "why not bring in the closer here?" while ignoring that he's pitched 3 of the last four, or "why not pinch hit here" and the why is a minor injury we're not privvy to.

The exception is the Heyward stuff. I understand how tough that can be from an interpersonal standpoint given their history playing together but the amount of playing time he got in the first half was downright irresponsible.

Did the front office take that decision out of Ross’ hands?

I’ve been wondering if the FO had the, “Are you injured or would you rather be released?” Discussion with Heyward. There really isn’t any place for him on the roster right now. I wouldn’t be surprised if he stayed “injured” until rosters expand in about 5 weeks.
