The Reds have claimed infielder Robel García off waivers from the Cubs, according to Mark Sheldon of MLB.com. García had been designated for assignment by the Cubs on Thursday. He has been optioned and assigned to the Reds’ alternate training site.

Yeah, I was hoping he would pass through waivers unclaimed and we'd get to keep him. Really frustrating because it would suck if he goes on and develops into a solid player/bench player with another team. No doubt he was a brief sparkplug for us last year.

 

I really wish he went to some team in the AL or another division.

Robel was a fun story last year, but he can’t field and got exploited pretty bad at the plate with minimal MLB exposure. Can’t say that I’m too worried about losing him given his age and the presence of Hoerner, Kipnis, Bote, Dietrich, and even Happ and Short.
