I've got Comcast so I'm stuck with the Sox broadcast. It's amazing how much less of a punishment this is than it would have been a few years ago with Hawk. Jason Benetti is no Len, but he's above average and I think he brings out the best from Stone as well.

Benetti is pretty damn good. I think him and Len are pretty even but obviously my bias has me preferring Len

Game got ugly for a little bit there, but Hendricks looked good, and that's about the only meaningful conclusion you can draw from one game like this, so, whatever.

Man it’s good to hear Len and JD’s voices.

Also, surprised to see the coaching staff wearing masks. Are they not tested as regularly as the players? Umps too. That’s gotta be brutal for the umps to be out there in masks.

They’re probably just being cautious. It’s not really that much of an inconvenience to wear a mask when you are just standing there. I wear mine outside in hot humid weather and it’s not really a big deal. So for baseball, if you are in a position to wear a mask and it doesn’t affect your ability to do your job, err on the side of wearing it.

I wear a mask 7 hours a day 5x a week in Florida doing pretty physical work at times. Certain tasks are outside. I use the surgical mask. It really isn't that big of a deal to me either.

It is spring training. There are no meaningful conclusions to be drawn other than "nobody got hurt today".

I think we can meaningfully conclude that Cotton is nothing more than a warm body who will never pitch in the majors (if it can be prevented)

Yeah, I like Jason Benetti but he's no Len Kasper. Huge improvement though

I understand the reason for the fake crowd noise, but are teams not allowed to individualize it at all? I’d love to hear a “let’s go Cubbies” or “Ja-vy, Ja-vy”

Boston could even do pre-recorded racist heckling.

I feel like a lot of the things that make ST pretty meaningless aren't as applicable to these exhibition games. There aren't a bunch of A Ballers making the level of competition a joke. Guys aren't at way different levels of readiness. And most importantly because of the proximity to the season you don't have a ton of guys just playing around trying stuff. Like Kyle Hendricks threw more curve balls than he would have in a real start, but he was still mostly Kyle Hendricks out there.

These games are pretty close to real baseball, especially for bubble guys like Cotton or Descalso. It is just one game, but I'd let these three games make the call in the competitions for the 28-30 spots like Descalso/Perez or Cotton/Tepera.

I know they played 'Javy' chants at some point during a non-televised scrimmage (I saw a tweet about it but I have no clue where to find it now), so they are at least prepared to do it if allowed.

edit - turns out I do have a clue

There’s still some sort of useful major league pitcher in Cotton (whether that’s RP, SP or a combo, idk). The Change Up is real and he has some pedigree. I figured he was more a development guy for this year anyways and would mostly be in the minors to see what the tracking data says and get him in the lab/pitching coaches and see where tweaks can come. I’m not ready to give up on him after a rougher 1+ innings in an exhibition game.
