Seriously though, it’s a head scratcher that Joe couldn’t have found a PA for Zobrist yesterday or today. I know he was on deck when the game ended yesterday but there were other low leverage spots today where he could have appeared (like when Caratini PH today).

I do wonder if some in the clubhouse feel like Zobrist quit on the team. I could 1000% be wrong I’ll admit because I know he was respected in the clubhouse before he left and his absence should seem completely reasonable to his teammates. Flame away for speculating this but it just seems odd he couldn’t get a PA while several other players PH

I get what you’re saying but doubt anyone in the clubhouse would react that way. They already were talking back mid-week how he likely wasn’t going to start yesterday or today vs LHP (they seem to prefer him hitting left handed from their comments). Maybe he isn’t fully ready yet, a little sore or dinged up and/or they/he feels he needs to work on a few things yet. I bet he starts vs King Felix tomorrow.

Of course he’ll start against Felix. Joe has a hard on for throwing guys right into the fire coming off the IL or rehab stints.

A pinch hit at bat or two against Major League guys would have been nice

it doesn't seem like it because this team has lost ground in the standings

Unless he's turned it around recently, King Felix has been pretty lousy this year.

He hasn’t and is still bad, but never underestimate the penchant this team has for making trash pitchers look like Cy Young contenders

We need to stay close over the next 9 days. Not sure if we can do that, but the Cards schedule gets a lot tougher once they are done with the Giants, Pirates and the shell of the Rockies (at least some of them are on the road). Our inability to score in Milwaukee and the trip to San Diego has me concerned if we can do that. If we can get to the final couple weeks with 7 against them, they have the Nationals and are in Arizona while we have the Reds and the Pirates.

I feel the same, just be within 1-2 games heading in to the Wrigley series. It’s still against us at this point with so few games left but there’s a chance. Also I know it’s a trip out there but San Diego is pretty bad themselves if the Rockies are a “shell of themselves.” 19-27 in the second half, Tatis done for the year, Franmil traded, Paddock could be shut down soonish, Greene is likely getting bounced at years end too.

That’s pretty bad but the Rockies are on a whole other level. They are 1-11 in their last 12 and 15-41 since the start of July

I had no idea they’ve been that bad, my god. Well hopefully the Cardinals will get Coors’d hard or the Rockies have a dead cat bounce the final few weeks.

Y'all I cackled for a good minute when they intentionally walked Almora to face Schwarbs

In that first game out in Seattle, Schwarber was up with a runner on base and Almora on deck with two outs in the eighth. Seattle led by a run. Watching it live, I had no clue why they wouldnt rather pitch to Almora.

Of course, Schwarber hit the game winning homer in that spot. The Mariners coaches really are morons.

Yeah, the formula for us to win the division is to manage to stay close through mid next week (say, 6-3, and hope the Cards don't just crush SF/Pit/Col), then either go 4-3 against St. Louis and destroy Pittsburgh (while the Cards are so-so against Mil/Wash/Ari) or go 5-2 against the Cards and then just be better than them in the other games.

Through 137 games last year, the Brewers were 5 games back of us with 6 H2H games remaining. They went 4-2 in those games. I know the Brewers got super hot (19-6 to end the year) but they also had to make up 2 more games than we do this year. So it's tough to do, and the Cubs will have to play well to do it, but it wouldn't be the craziest thing for it to happen.

We're somewhere between 1 in 3 and 1 in 5 to win the division. Which seems long until you remember that the Brewers were somewhere between 1 in 10 and 1 in 20 last year at this time. That being said, I certainly wouldn't bet on this team winning the division because they haven't shown the ability to play the kind of good baseball this year that it will likely take to win the division. But it wouldn't be the craziest thing if it happened.

it doesn't seem like it because this team has lost ground in the standings

That, plus the fact that most of their losses and even a few of their wins have been pretty frustrating.
