If Addison got help, fundamentally changed and grew and bettered as a person, father, co-parent and significant other than there is no doubt the Cubs did the right thing for Addison Russell and his family. Would that have happened if he had been cut and picked up by another team? Who knows. We as fans have every right to be upset about it, but I'd rather me be upset about him being on the team and him not being abusive then have him on some other team and potentially continuing his abusive behavior.

edit - just for clarification sake, I don't want him on the team and haven't wanted him on the team since Melissa came forward. But I'm open to the possibility that the Cubs are actually doing the right thing.

you're entertaining the idea that the cubs may have fixed him as a person by letting him off the hook and then saying some words? the cubs don't care at all if he improves as a person.

They’re not.

You cannot recover from being an abuser without removing yourself from the power that you abused. It’s like insisting you can stop being addicted to a drug without giving up the drug.

He used money and his status as a baseball player to abuse women. He will continue to be an abuser until those sources of power are removed from him, and the Cubs are enablers because they don’t really care if he abuses women if he puts up a good $/war.

Listening to this presser, I don't have a problem with them genuinely attempting to better Russell and maybe save someone else from further abuse, I just don't want to have to root for him on my baseball team. It's a weird feeling I can't exactly reconcile or feel great about on either side.

I believe in Theo's sincerity and also think he's taking the easy way out. You can revamp the org's approach to preventing DV and dealing with those situations, but that's the relatively easy part. It's retreating into improving process while the bigger statement is to be made by actually acknowledging fans who are most hurt and conflicted by Russell's presence on the roster.

It’s pretty easy to talk yourself into sincerely believing the shitty thing you are doing isn’t wrong when it’s in your self-interest to believe it.

This.

This horsefeathering horsefeathers hasn't had to confront anything or be punished or hit bottom or whatever the horsefeathers; he's been coddled and helped and looked out for at every possibility opportunity. How the horsefeathers is this supposed to fix him?

And people saying that trying to further his baseball career are also "helping his family" are out of their [expletive] minds. Willfully enabling the guy abusing his family is NOT horsefeathering HELPING HIS FAMILY. That's a crass take that hinges on the fucked up idea that the best thing for an abused family is for their abuser to be able to provide for them (which this [expletive] even figured out how to make abusive).

This is all garbage. horsefeathers these owners. horsefeathers this FO. I can't wait until they're all gone. They've tainted everything by repeatedly being shitheads about this kind of thing.

"Theo's sincerity." Don't make me barf. The guy that traded for Chapman, traded for Murphy and has repeatedly ducked every opportunity to get rid of Russell isn't sincere about a horsefeathering thing outside of the bottom line of how it impacts the performance of his baseball team. He's a drunk sports bro horsefeathers who doesn't give a flying horsefeathers about this sort of thing. It probably KILLS him that he couldn't figure out a way to draft Luke Heimlich without it blowing back on him.

THE CRACK OF THE SHOULDER.

The roar of the crowd. That's right, baseball's back. Hello, New York, I'm Bill McNeal.

I was pretty annoyed there wasn't a Newsradio version of Frinkiac when I was posting that.

Ever more annoying is that a show that great isn't streaming anywhere except for, like, 5 episodes on godforsaken Crackle.

THIS WORLD SUCKS.

That’s good to see the follow through and extension like that. You’d assume he’s healthy if he’s doing that.

Another new change in stance for heyward? This one is the wildest yet.

Cross-handed (and righty) would be a big change.
