while i'm totally fine with trading him, if that's all you get for him (and at his salary) i'd rather just keep him around for, at the very least, rotational depth.

Yeah I just don't see a situation where you're getting enough back when you're only saving 2 million off the cap and you still need to then get #1 running back. Especially with limited cap space and draft picks.

So apparently Long's restructured "Bear for life" contract is only 1 year guarenteed with a 2020 option.

I just don't see how they get much value for Howard. He's got one year left on his deal and has gotten worse every year. Maybe you get a 4th for him? I guess there was a report that someone offered a 3rd for him last year at the deadline. I get why they didn't pull the trigger since they were in the middle of the season and had no replacement. I doubt they get that offer again, but maybe I'm wrong.

Huh? This would make absolutely no sense.

None at all. Just a dumb reporter with nothing better to talk about attempting to connect dots.

On the one hand it would be so very 2019 to feel relief having dodged a Kareem Hunt signing and then get blindsided by an AP one.

On the other hand isn't the whole point of moving on from Howard to get someone more well rounded? Peterson's not really that guy.

AP switching his kid's [expletive] until it bleeds was just horrendous and he has no remorse for it whatsoever. I would legit boycott the Bears if they signed AP.

The more this man tweets the more I understand what a mess the Bears were when he was there. Although he's hardly alone in his angry old white man approach as far as the league goes.

Childress was with the Bears, and then he left to take one of those head coach jobs in the new league. He left that subsequent job over conflicts with the GM.

The Howard situation is interesting. At this point, I think a trade is going to happen at some point. It's going to be hard to comeback from putting your starting RB out there on the trade block and press conferences detailing what the Bears want in a RB.

But the Bears are in the position where signing a better RB than Howard increases the payroll and takes away other needs with a limited budget. And if they don't sign a RB to replace Howard, they go into the draft with the 87th pick and very little flexibility pick wise to get the guy they want.

The two scenarios I feel are likely, are trading Howard in the next few days. Carlos Hyde was traded for a 5th. Ajayi was traded for a 4th. Ajayi was the same age as Howard, but had an extra 1/2 year under contract. Hyde was significantly older and had 2 more years on his deal, but 0 guaranteed. So that was essentially a 1/2 season trade. So, I think Howard's cost is closer to a 4th rounder than a 5th. Maybe 4th and 7th or 4th and 6th with the Bears throwing in a 7th. After trading Howard, the Bears could then move on to Tevin Coleman, who appears to be a pretty good fit for the Nagy offense. One cut runner that gets downhill in a hurry, but also the ability to line up as a receiver and run a legit route tree. He's terrible in short yardage though, so another guy would need to be brought in (likely in the draft) unless they think Ryan Nall can take over that role.

The other is waiting until draft day to trade Howard. Something like Howard and pick 87, to move up higher in the 3rd. Then draft whoever they determine is their guy. I have a suspicion that may be David Montgomery, and am working on an article to show why.

Bears have around 18.5 mil in space after restructuring Goldman and re-signing Braunecker. Rumored interest so far has been meh, Cordarrelle Patterson and Mark Ingram. And missed out on Eric Weddle.

I think Howard hurt more than he helped last year. He was pretty bad and while he didn't get 20+ carries a game, he still got 250 carries. My guess is that he also limited the offense's options when he was in the game. Sure - he's cheap and already on the roster, but why settle for someone who was so unproductive last year? We good with 3.7 ypc on 250 carries next year? What indication has Howard given that he's capable of turning this around? Let's be real: this guy had one good season.

Exactly. You know those RB’s who have one or two good years and then fall of the face of the earth? Howard is three seconds from being that guy.

i dunno i can get into the Bears signing Bell.

I'm also not against an Ingram signing and running with Ingram-Cohen as Ingram-Kamara Lite for a year or two

I mean Bell would be a great fit but I am not versed enough with the Bears present and future cap room to say its a good or bad move. At the very least the guarantees in a deal should be gone by the time Mitch is extended.

They definitely don't have much space. If they really felt it was worth it they could swing it though. But you're re probably going cheap on NB and S.

They can also just keep getting creative with the cap by leveraging future cap years. I'd probably be okay with that as going all in on a 2-3 year window, doing a mini blow up in Mitchs first year of his next contract and then picking back up the pieces after that.

Bears sign Mike Davis

Hmm after getting hyped by the names mentioned that seems underwhelming. Still 4.6 YPC last year and 34 receptions last year in a running back by committee, probably a good bet to bring surplus value. Wonder how he is as a blocker

I would say he could just as easily be a Cunningham of Mizell replacement, but he also signed pretty quickly so maybe this is a more serious commitment.

I'm not super versed in the workings of the cap, but in the Athletic today they laid out that the Bears only have $14.4 left after obvious resignings/renewals and whatnot. Bell would take up essentially all of that I think. Is he worth basically being forced to replace Amos and Callahan with day 3 draft picks? I lean no, but won't dismiss the idea out of hand.

My guess would be that the best course is to spread the money around. For example, sign one of the safeties the tier below Amos, a second tier RB like Coleman or Ingram, and an Aaron Lynch replacement (Terrell Suggs?). Then use the draft to find a Callahan replacement. Spreading the money also has the benefit of more likely comp picks, but that's a secondary concern.
