Today is the deadline for adding players to the 40 man roster to protect them from the Rule 5 draft. Who is at risk? Any other teams players of note?

I believe Steele & Clifton will be exposed if they aren't protected

Related to this, expect to see the Padres make a trade or three today since they have way too many guys for roster spots. IMO they're one of the more logical landing spots for Russell, so we could see some movement on that front.

Saw a tweet that Minnesota isn't going to put Tyler Jay on their 40-man... lefty reliever, 6th pick in 2015 draft, throws low 90s. Might be worth a look, though he has struggled in the minors - has had some shoulder issues so that may be related.

We lost that Rowengardner dude we claimed from the Mets last month to the Rangers. 40-man now at 38.

You mean Reinheimer?

like he said, Runamoker

I think he meant Whimerheiner

*does shot of koolaid*

Getting arms like Wick and to a lesser extent Clarkin is the type of thing you might do if you’re filling Chavez’s spot for cheap to use money elsewhere.

Yeah if they plan to Iowa shuttle it with the last bullpen spot they’re adding plenty of somewhat intriguing arms. Maples, Mekkes, Wick, Norwood, Webster, Hancock, etc. Clarkin I view as a guy they want to sneak through at a later date to get off the 40-man, I doubt we get to ST with him still taking up a 40-man spot (whether he’s with us or on another team).

The Padres have designated righty Colin Rea for assignment along with infielders Cory Spangenberg and Allen Cordoba, the club announced. San Diego also designated Christian Villanueva, whose contract rights will be sold to a Japanese club.

Spangenberg hasn't really put it together but he can play multiple positions and has some speed and pop so I don't imagine he'll make it through waivers.

I would be happy if we replaced Seal Boy with Spangenberg. You lose some contact but gain some everything else.

Spangenberg was a Hoyer/McLeod pick too.

Dietrich would be a nice pick up too.

Good finds, Tom. If both those guys make it to the minor league portion of the draft, they'd be interesting as roster fillers with a chance.

Well he wouldn't cost anything now

The Padres have released infielder Cory Spangenberg on the heels of this week’s DFA, as first reflected on the MLB.com transactions list. He’s now a free agent and is eligible to sign with any team.

I'd rather go after Dietrich.

Same, way more certain bat

Why not both? See if you can get Spangenberg on a MiLB deal with a ST invite. If not, meh. I also prefer Dietrich, but Spangenberg's defense is higher rated.
