Russell, for better or for worse, is not in danger of "losing his job." At least not via someone already with the Cubs.
You talking the remainder of this year?

Have to think they stick with Murphy Baez up the middle

That's not losing his job; that's bringing in a rental to offset an injured player who can't hit worth a damn right now.

the middle infield should clearly be murphy/baez the rest of the way, assuming murphy stays healthy and productive. if russell hasn't lost his starting job for the rest of the season, then it's because of joe being dumb.

that is a very odd distinction you're making. losing the starter role for the rest of the season counts as losing his job in the context of the post you replied to. it is very reasonable to assume that russell is not happy about primarily being a bench player for the rest of 2018.

We have been talking Harper for a while now but I do think the Cubs make a push for Machado.

Harper is better and makes more sense, IMO. Russell is starting to get expensive and can't have much value to another team because his value would be to a team trying to win nowish. Happ/Almora probably have some more value because of control and being cheaper in terms of moving to make room for Bryce. Russell as not an everyday guy is still plenty good, the defense is still really important.

And I'm sure he's also not happy about how miserable he's been offensively and how he's been injured. Of course he'd rather be out there, but I also doubt he's worried that he's in any danger of "losing his job" beyond this season at this point. What's happening right now isn't much different than if he were just on the DL the rest of the way; it's clear Murphy's not coming back, and it's clear also that Theo and co. have, better or for worse, invested in Russell for the foreseeable future. The comment that kicked this off, IMO, made it sound more like a Castro-type situation, where you had a perpetually underperforming player with serious internal options right behind him.

No..just to be clear..

My OP was just for this year and only because of Murphy being on team now and how well both he and Baez are playing and hitting at top of order..

Everything clicking for them..

Gotcha. Well, still; I don't think Russell is stubborn enough to think he's a better option right now offensively, and that not getting much playing time as a starter is going to impact him detrimentally. Disappointed? Sure. But these guys are even more hyperaware than us when they're struggling.
