Wonderful. West coast games. The first of at least three that I will refuse to stay up and watch. I'd imagine Raisin is happy, though.

Some rookie left-hander I've never heard of is going for the Giants. He's was great in June (2.62 ERA) and followed it up with 7 innings and only 1 run AT Colorado. But the Cubs are historically great against rookie pitchers they've never faced, right? Or was that some other team?

The inconsistent Cubs, meanwhile, send out their very own Kyle HRendricks. The Giants have had trouble scoring runs, but they've gotta be happy with who they're facing in this game. Somehow, HRendricks starts this year have reminded me a lot of this movie:

At least they don't have to face MadBum this series.

Have fun in the game thread. I'll be checking the final of this one on Tuesday morning.

No excuse to not feast on a pair of crappy WC teams to at least keep pace with the VB.

Yeah it would be nice to win these two series and go 4-2 going in to the break, though I'd be fine going 3-3 (just basically don't go like 1-5). Hopefully, somehow, the VBs will finally lose but I'm not holding my breath in the Marlins series with them. The Pirates series this weekend is a 5 game series with a DH so hopefully they only win 2 of those games, somehow.

Damn, the Brewers have 8 games this week compared to our 6. They’ll have play 5 more than us at the break. Hopefully we can be up a couple in the loss column.

We'll make up two of those games with the 5-gamer right out of the break against the Cards while the Brewers only have 3 that weekend.

The Pirates have been hot garbage lately.

They are hot garbage. But their true talent level isn’t far off from Milwaukee’s and they’re at home, where they’re not as bad (22-23) and the Brewers have been more ordinary (24-18) on the road. I’ll be almost annoyed as this Braves series if the Pirates don’t win at least twice.

It's tremendously annoying that the Cubs can't handle the dumb VB themselves for a while.

It is and the next time we play them it’s only a 2 game series in August. Then I think we get them 7 times in September.

It's hard to get too upset about our overall performance against them, since we're still 8-3 or whatever, but that last series against them is still pissing me off. We won the first game after coming back against Hader and wearing out their whole bullpen while we were using the AAA guys. Then we didn't score the next two games in the series. We had that series set up perfectly to sweep and make a nice move and instead just kicked the can down the road.

Those head-to-head series really don't matter too much if you don't get swept. And I wouldn't care about that series at all if it weren't the most recent one against them. But it still leaves a sour taste.

We also scored 13 runs the next game, which was against the Cardinals, so that was a nice consolation. But those last two games of that Brewers series are still the worst timing of boom-or-bust and stupid sequencing of the first half.

At least if it's a three-game series. You're only gaining or losing one game. On the whole it can add up. But the potential is there for a serious shift if you get swept. So avoiding a sweep is usually enough for me to not be too upset.

Sure, but its just weirdly reductionist. By the same reasoning you could say that no games matter very much since its just one game. That might be true, but a game against the team you are competing with for a spot is doubly important, no matter the context of the games that came immediately before and after.

On a different note, the difference between losing a 3 game set 1-2 and winning a 3 game set 2-1 is a two game swing in the standings.

It's only a 1 game swing..... let's say two teams come in tied in a 3 series the team that wins the series leaves 1 game up, the team that loses leaves 1 game down.

Nope, two game swing. Consider the outcome if the opposite happens. You go down a game instead. The difference between going up a game and going down a game is two games.
