It's so you don't end up with a scenario where one team doesn't have to try because their situation was determined by a game earlier in the day and it benefits some other team just because they played 3 hours later.

 

They started doing it in soccer years ago because a couple teams in the World Cup played a boring draw so they would both advance (had there been a winner, the loser would have been eliminated). There was also an instance where one team knew how many goals they had to score to win the tiebreaker since they played later in the day.
