Curious outing; may be wrong, but I thought in past the Cubs had a 30-pitch limit for prospect pitchers in an inning?

Brailyn Marquez pitched in the Eloy game, a walk and 6 hits in his one inning.

Allowed to stay in for 43 pitches in his inning.

I think its 40, isn't it? If so, he was probably allowed to finish the hitter he was pitching to.

I'll be at the South Bend game this afternoon.

Cool. It'd be nice if you get to see Pereda behind the plate.

Wrecking the major league team with your words wasn't enough? Can nothing quench your bloodlust? They're just babies!

I'll be sure to keep my distance from Dylan Cease.

He's on horsefeathering fire. Longenhagen said today he's an interesting trade chip, as a guy that can play some 1B, catch as a fill in, and hit for an AL team.

Doesn't sound like anything great, but he's probably got more individual value than Vogelbach did. If he can net us another Montgomery on his own, I'd be thrilled. More likely he's a second or third piece in a larger deal, but he's definitely one of the best things to happen in our minors so far this year.

South Bend definitely has some talent. D.J. Wilson is clearly the crown jewel. I'm not sure there's anyone else that's all that exciting, but Wilson's tools are legit. Short and Paredes were impressive, too. There's no way Paredes stays at short, though. He has no speed. And he's a couple pounds away from looking like Pablo Sandoval. He looked fine in the field. There was nothing too tough hit at him, but he looked smooth and has a nice arm. Short has a nice arm, too. And he made a nice diving snag of a liner at third. I wonder where all the errors are coming from with him.

All three hit the ball hard a couple times, too. Paredes and Short have really nice approaches at the plate. Wilson drew a walk against a lefty. His approach seemed fine. There was some swing-and-miss, but it wasn't too bad. He was late on some high heat once and was fooled on a breaking ball. But he hit a couple of hard liners. He gets his money's worth with his swing, at that size. Quick hands. And he's incredibly fast and runs the bases very well.

Duncan Robinson pitched and pitched well. Lots of weakly-hit ground balls. His curveball looked good and had them off-balance all day. But I'm not so sure that it wasn't just because their lineup was clueless. And judging by their batting lines, it appears that might be the case. Their big first baseman squared him up well a couple times. And the rest of the hitters looked hapless.

Perada played first, so I didn't get to see him work behind the dish.

How was Robinson's velocity?

Burlington doesn't have a scoreboard gun. From my perception, eh... low 90s, tops, maybe high 80s. The opposing pitcher was definitely throwing harder. His curve looked really good, though. And it had them fooled often. And he pounded the zone with his fastball.

Kind of what I expected on Paredes.

Did you see anything interesting about Peguero?

Peguero looks like he has some talent, too. But I'm not quite sure what's going on in his head. Maybe he was having a bad day. But he was almost picked off at first, by not sliding back in. The first base coach seemed pretty pissed off and made sure to let him know to slide instead of waltzing back in. And then two batters later, Burlington had a play on him at the plate, and the runner on base in front of him, Cummins, who had just scored was telling him to get down, and he just ran straight through the plate. He would have been out had the catcher not dropped the throw. And he just walked back into the dugout and Cummins was standing by the plate still, staring at him as he walked away, in disbelief.

Peguero, Paredes, and Short were all interesting for varying reasons. But none of them are shortstops, so that dampens my enthusiasm a lot. Any of them could develop into solid utility-type guys that could play short in a pinch. Paredes could be more if he develops some power.

I liked Wilson a lot, though. Just to compare him to a couple of other speedy CF-type guys from last year, I wasn't very enamored with either Dewees or Eddy Martinez. It was easy to see that Wilson was the most talented player on the field, though. The tools are legit. And he's very exciting. Very fast. Strong arm. Hits the ball hard when he does make contact. He elevated the ball, too. Line drives.

You didn't see anything in Short that makes you think he can stick at SS? I've read he ought to be able to.

I guess I shouldn't say that he can't, because, well, I didn't even see him there. And his arm will play on the left side of the infield. I didn't get a good read on his speed, either. The opportunity didn't really present itself for him to show off his wheels. Maybe he has the range.

If he could, he would be an intriguing guy. I wonder how much pop he can hit for. He was a lot more muscular than I'd seen in pictures of him. It looks like he's filled out since college.

Your report on Wilson seems in tune with about everything I've seen, which is great. I think he started slow last year too, hopefully he can turn it up a bit sooner. A top of the order speedster would be a very fun piece to add to the mix in a few years.

Am I correct to assume that Cease will pitch on Thursday? I'm already going to see South Bend in Peoria on Friday. But if Cease is going Thursday, I think I'll have to go to that one, too.

Yeah, I think it should be Cease Thursday but right now Manuel Rondon is listed (he only went 1 inning in his last appearance because it was a continuation of a suspended game that didn't last long).
