This is weird not feeling anxiety before a season or despair. The rare seasons they were good heading into the season you wondered how Baker would screw it up and how they had to win despite him. 84', 89' , 98', 01' proved to be one year anomalies that faded as quickly as they arrived. Those flukish years masked terrible baseball.

Now, the Cubs have one of the youngest and productive cores in MLB with the best FO and manager in place.

It's great to watch pressure free baseball.

Last year was more of a relief than anything more about my grandfather, my father, past suffering, etc.

This season is about enjoying the best product we'll ever see in our lives and just that.

this is cool but i can't say i ever felt anxiety or despair going into a season

Those early to mid 90's teams with Brian McRae had me feeling that way. The Carlos Pena teams as well.

I really wish MLB would have all teams playing today. I dont like a staggered opening day. Just feels a little off. Opening Day should allow for maximum fan participation so starting the season on a Saturday or Sunday makes the most sense. I cancelled my MLB Extra Innings package this year because I will be out of the country fro 2 months and didnt want to pay for something I am not using for that time. That being said any websites out there that might aid in my watching from my laptop would be greatly appreciated

MLB Opening Day at Tampa seems like poor planning. That place is the most dreary atmosphere in the whole league.

From a quick glance, the Rays normally 2x their average attendance on opening day, plus the Yankees are a good road draw, especially in Florida.

I wouldn't describe it like that, but definitely a ton of a seasons already resigned to, "well, let's see how close they can get to .500!"

this is good

It is still somehow Cubs-ian that, as defending champions, they’re opening on the road and against their once-greatest nemesis. The old paradigm stands up to take another swing, but it’s probably a feeble one anyway. It’s also still Cubs-ian that talk of winning consecutive World Series comes steeped in reminders of just how long it has been since that has happened. Reminders that carry a familiar tone of trepidation about decades and improbability.

But tell the Cubs more about improbability. About an absurdly small win expectancy in Game Four of the division series, about back-to-back shutouts before claiming the National League pennant, about three games to one, and about a tie game and a rain delay.

So in the new season, the Cubs are still the World Series favorites, both poetically and objectively. There are all of the things we know: the absurdly talented and young offensive core, the sterling rotation, the deep bullpen, the farm system still well-stocked to spring up another impact piece or two, the perspicacious manager, the still-vigorous front office, and the owner who shares the fan’s romanticism but is possessed of the means and the patience to make the franchise into what was once its antithesis.

And there are the things we can’t know, but still know enough to expect: players sometimes inexplicably slump, key pieces go down to injury, prospects disappoint and are forgotten, and front offices make bad trades.

But none of these carry the same weight of seasons like 1985, 2004, or even 2009. If the old Cubs context crumbled partially after 2015, it collapsed entirely after 2016.
