There was a guy on the old Usenet rec.sport.baseball who got some of the early sabr guys to waste hours arguing with him over whether Pete Rose was the greatest hitter of all-time by definition because it is called hitting and he had the most hits.

By what measure?

 

i'd say if we're trying to determine who the best hitter was, wRC+ would be the way to go.

Bryant's relative speed artificially beefs up his hitting stats so if we're judging who will be the best purely within the batter's box, it's probably Rizzo with an outside chance of Schwarber

 

i know that's not exactly the question, but a worthwhile distinction to make nonetheless

I think we'll look back at 2017 as Rizzo's offensive peak. Bryant will probably take a minor step back.
