I'm allowed to love Jay Cutler whilst realizing he was a mostly average QB. Don't try to make it an either or. He was still just about the only exciting reason to waste three hours of my Sundays on this sad sack of a franchise in the past 3 years.

It is a deeper class next year.

Sam Darnold, all of 9 starts under his belt, does look like the next big thing, and if you tried would struggle to be in a spot to grab him.

Josh Rosen looks talented, but just missed half of this season's campaign to injury and apparently has off field concerns.

Josh Allen, one season against subpar competition. However unsure anyone feels about Trubisky and lack of experience, you should feel approximately 100 times less sure of Allen.

Those are probably the consensus top 3, then you have Falk, Browning, Rudolph, Jackson in the next teir and then several more amongst the teir after.

But overall, while definitely a deep group, other than the guy with 366 passes and THREE remaining years of eligibility, none of these guys look like anything that wasn't available this draft or the previous one, just a bit deeper perhaps.

But on top of that analysis, whether you want to quibble with the above or whatever, all that still really matters is ; Was Trubisky worth what we paid for him now? If the rest of the 2017 class would be third rounders next year, all that really matters still is how Trubiksy ranks now.

horsefeathers that. Josh Rosen's off-field concerns are that he thinks college athletes should be paid and he wore a F*** Trump hat when golfing at a Trump golf course.

He's apparently a big partier although I'm not sure that should be a big deal, depending on how under or out of control it is.

Is this because of the hot tub? That's just the kid being super rich. He's no bigger a party guy than most college athletes.

Royal, Sutton, Lasikw, & Edison, get the axe. No big surprises, except maybe that Houston didn't. Might keep him thru camp and let him compete.

Houston has made it this far, he probably stays. The Bears don't really have a young OLB that they are desperate to get on the field. If he doesn't make the team, you're looking at Dan Skuta and Sam Acho fighting it out for the 4th guy in the OLB rotation.

He probably does make it, especially since the Bears don't need cap room. But, I'm thinking Robertson-Harris conceivably can make Houston expendable.

Agreed you don't want those guys as your 4th LB. They are basically STers.

I have a suspicion they are high on Roy Robertson-Harris and he'll compete for that 4th spot with Houston. Its the only explanation for the lack of offseason activity at OLB considering the depth and injury history of those spots.

Last I heard, Robertson-Harris has put on some weight (to about 285) and will compete at DE. Of course, he's still listed at 268 and a LB on the website.

Houston is listed at 274 and 6'3". McPhee 273 and 6'3". RRH is listed at 6'7", so even at 285 thats a thinner frame than those two, and probably not far off Young at 6'4" 258.

I assume that RRH is now a DE and Howard just displaced Sutton from the depth chart

Also, I guess alignment/scheme is really all that matters. Willie Young is listed as a LB and lines up on the outside, but often with his hand in the dirt. Probably drops into coverage less than the other guys listed as LB. Maybe RRH is whatever that position is? Leonard Floyd plays a similar role but standing up mostly.

Two AFC scouts revealed that they had the highest grade on Trubisky that they’d had on any quarterback over the past six years. That means: higher than Jameis Winston; higher than Marcus Mariota; higher than Cam Newton; higher than Russell Wilson; higher than Andrew Luck; higher than Derek Carr; higher than Carson Wentz.

The evaluation of one NFC regional scouting team was that “Trubisky is an almost perfect quarterback prospect” and that 'the Bears should count their lucky stars he only started 13 games because if he was a two-year starter, he goes 1/1 [overall No. 1] without hesitation.”

shaheen better be doubling down on leg days

Pretty crazy he weighed in at 277 with legs like that. He doubles down on leg day, he's an offensive tackle.

Off day and I had some time, so thought I'd serve up another tall glass of Bears Kool-Aid. I've been looking at this UDFA class and it seems like they've continued their trend of finding guys with lots of production at small schools. And most of these guys didn't even get invited to the combine, some despite huge stats and first team All-American FCS on their resume.

So if this class hits it seems like it could be a big win for Pace scouting department. He got his guys in place for the second draft and by the third draft they're scouring the FCS schools. Seems like that was always probably part of the plan, and I'd think it'll continue.

The first guy that's been getting all the pub in the drills with no pads is...

Tanner Gentry - WR - Wyoming - 4.58 40-dash 6'2 220

He had 72 receptions for 1,326 and 14 TDs as Josh Allen's primary target. His 49 targets on deep passes was the most among college receivers (PFF). The PFF scouting report says he has NFL starter potential, and that his strengths are jump balls, sideline catches, and "circus" catches. But he's also not that slow and clearly can get downfield.

He didn't get an invite to the combine, which seems weird for a guy who had those numbers and played with a likely high first round QB. But it's also weird that I couldn't find a highlight video for him. I'm guessing that for a guy whose goal is to "eventually be one of the best receivers in the league" going undrafted was a harsh lesson in the virtues of self-promotion. Hopefully he just got missed because he's a white guy from Wyoming and forgot to hire an agent or something.

Either way, he doesn't have a good highlight video, so here's one of Josh Allen. It's pretty much all Allen heaving it downfield, while only occasionally looking where he's throwing it and Gentry making all kinds of jump ball grabs. He's very much of the jump up in the air, grab it, and fall down variety with zero YAC, but that can be pretty valuable if you can also have a knack for getting open on broken plays.

On his training camp (some good Trubisky stuff too): http://sportsmockery.com/2017/05/one-name-dominated-early-bears-rookie-minicamp/

PFF scouting report: https://www.profootballfocus.com/draft-pff-scouting-report-tanner-gentry-wr-wyoming/

Alex Scearce - LB - Coastal Carolina - 4.51 40-dash 6'3 235

He transitioned from safety to LB this year as a junior and made 1st team All-American FCS. Had 84 tackles, 8 sacks, 18.5 TFL, 5 picks, 3 forced fumbles, 2 recoveries, 3 TDs (2 off picks, 1 off fumble) and 12 PDs. Another guy who didn't get a combine invite, but ran a 4.61 on his pro day with 24 bench reps. If someone actually saw him do those reps it's pretty impressive, as there were only 2 linebackers who beat that mark at the combine.

Lots of production though and seems like good ball skills for a guy who transitioned from safety. Could be a good option at inside linebacker.

Rashaad Coward - DT - Old Dominion - 5.08 40-dash 6'5 322

Had 47 and 49 tackles the last two years, which seems like a lot for a DT. Not much TFL productivity, but a huge dude who seems like he can play some run defense, according to PFF:

-Coward’s 2016 grade ranked 21/172 among all DIs in his draft class (minimum 250 snaps). Well-balanced, he ranked 30th in pass-rushing grade and 17th in run defense.

-His 2016 run-stop percentage of 9.5 percent ranked 12th among defensive tackles in his class and recorded the eighth-most stops (27). Coward’s pass-rushing productivity rating of 6.6 was good for 18th (minimum 200 run/pass snaps).

Isaiah Irving- DE/OLB San Diego Stated - 4.87 40-dash 6'3 255x

Had 45 tackles with 7 sacks and 11 total TFL. Not elite measurables but another guy who got to the QB this year.

*All measurements and combine results are taken from their nfldraftscout.com pages.

Then some other guys . Joel Bouagnon, RB 6'1 230, 4.66 40-dash had 18 TDs as a junior at NIU and zero fumbles (in 2016 at least according to some tweet I saw). Seems like the type of poor man's Howard that could win a spot over Carey or the other guy they got. OT Joseph at 6'6 300, the article below says he was looked at as a 6/7th rounder and could be a steal. But he's got 30 inch arms, so it's probably not at tackle (Chris Williams had 32). House at TE (6'6 250) is a star basketball player who hasn't played foosball, so all upside there. Another guy with measurables though. Then OT Kirsch was a FCS All American, but haven't read anything that reviews him highly enough to get me excited. They also got a fullback who....ah ok, that's enough.

But some potential good looking guys there, to go along with a draft that I liked and think has some good upside. Check out this article and enjoy getting geeked over Bears prospects, now that most of the meaningful Cubs ones are playing on the Cubs.

CHICAGO—Saying that he is solely focused on becoming the best quarterback possible, a 22-year-old first-round draft pick who will get most of the franchise leadership fired told reporters Monday that he is “just here to win football games.” “Making it to the NFL has always been my dream, and I’m really excited to go out there and have some fun playing the sport I love,” said the second overall pick, whose poor on-field performance and lack of noticeable improvement over the next three years will lead to the terminations of his head coach, offensive coordinator, head scout, GM, and 70 percent of the front office staff before he himself is released the following season. “I just want to show what I’m made of and leave it all out there for the team. I’m ready to prove myself and help take us to the next level.” The draft pick also added he was excited to deliver a championship to the fans that will one day burn his jersey in effigy.

Gentry's performance over the weekend is definitely getting some hype if you know where to look (by rookie camp standards)

Saw the headline and figured it must be from ESPN.com

I'm going to go ahead and say that Gentry makes the team.

who knows what will come of him, but one thing that sticks out to me is he's the last guy on his team to move on the snap of the ball most of those downs, and a little sloppy on first few steps. He'll probably need a ton of technique work if he's going to last.
