Quickest release since Jay Cutler?

(actually, wasn't the super quick release sexy rexy's "plus plus hands?")

Quick release? Nah just cannons for arms.

Nah, there was the cannon thing but I remember Grossman's quick release being talked about at draft time.

Only mention I can find of it 14 years later (holy horsefeathers) is from some random site though http://www.footballguys.com/rookieqb.htm

Rex Grossman 6'1 217 lbs / school - Florida / drafted by - Chicago Bears with the 22nd pick overall.

The Bears made a mistake selecting Rex Grossman in round one when they could have taken Chris Simms later on. That is not to say Rex Grossman will be a bust because I think he has enough talent to be a solid NFL quarterback. However I don't see him becoming an elite quarterback at the professional level and round one was too early for him to go. His positive attributes are a quick release; good arm strength and has good timing on his throws. The negatives on him would be poor decisions on the field that result in him throwing the ball into bad situations and not having a nice soft touch on his underneath throws.

Rex Grossman will not play much this season as the Bears will give him at least a season, if not more to learn the nuances of the NFL. Kordell Stewart will be under the helm all season and if he does a good job in 2003 will likely be back to lead the team again in 2004. Rex Grossman has the tools to be a starting NFL quarterback for many seasons to come but I don't think he'll ever reach a consistent Pro Bowl level.

Man someone just reminded me that we had that pick because we beat SF during the season.

Thanks a lot Pace/Fox/Barkley

we only had the pick because we lost a heartbreaker to Jacksonville.

Melifonwu was a CB in college, right? he's as fast as a CB, and big like a safety. could he project at CB? Is it only his size that causes him to project at S?

Supposedly, there's a few teams looking at him as a CB still. Your guy(Desmond King) and Justin Evans are also looked at as possibilities at either spot. With our needs at both and our lack of current picks.....I'd probably prefer one of those 3(not at 36, but a slight trade down), and let it work itself out where the kid plays.

True, I guess. What Barkley taketh, Bellamy gave back. Bellamy for GM.

I still like Desmond King as a CB. Also, I like Teez Tabor and think he has amazing instincts but has fallen because of his poor 40 times.

I'd have to look a little more but I think he played mostly safety. He racked up 118 tackles in 2016 (compared someone like Lattimore who only had like 35) and he averaged 77 in his previous 3 years. I had read that he could play CB but I'd hope we could just plug him in at safety. But this one where I'll admit I know nothing about most of the safety prospects so won't die in the Obi hill. I'd just like to get that FS solidified and hopefully with one who can create some turnovers.

this is a guy that would seemingly have the ability to come up and cover the new type of TE's.

that's because pace told fox to tank

I doubt that Fox is any better at tanking than he is at really coaching.

I keep flip flopping my opinion on this deal after reading all the takes. I think overall I am slightly down on the move and here is why:

This was all about calling the 49ers bluff. Maybe the Browns were really ready to deal, maybe they weren't. If you call SF's bluff and Cleveland really does have a strong offer on the table, the 49ers will lose the guy they supposedly really wanted in Solomon Thomas by moving down to 12. So maybe SF doesn't accept the Browns deal and takes Thomas.

For the Bears, if the Browns trade up and take Trubisky, oh well you still have 7 draft picks to fill the many holes this team still has, you still have a potentially decent starting QB in Glennon the next few years (who will be starting next year anyways). People are saying Trubisky is partially self-preservation for Pace because he won't start next year and might not start the year after, but I'm not sure you can keep Pace employed long enough to see how he pans out if this draft nets us no immediate impact talent, and now we have less bullets to get that talent.

I do like Trubisky as a player, I think he has the tools and has a high enough floor that he is probably going to end up no worse than an average starting QB. But I'm just not sure it was worth trading all those picks when there was a decent chance they could have gotten him at 3 and kept all their picks. I guess if Jacksonville was also involved it makes a little more sense for Pace to pull the trigger because Thomas might have fallen to 4.

That highlight reel is not all that impressive to me. The first throw was real nice, but then you've got a couple high school caliber throws and a whole bunch of guys were open by 7+ yards passes for his biggest highlights. Damn that guy didn't seem to face many teams that could cover receivers.

Maybe this guy turns out to be great, but the problem is they wasted this free agency season spending on a QB plus all the picks when this team needed lots of help elsewhere so now all we can do is sit around for 3 years and hope it works.

HOW DARE HE FIND THE OPEN GUY! I WANNA SEE HIM FORCE THROWS INTO TRAFFIC!!!!

Well, that was unexpected. I generally think trade ups are stupid and overly expensive in terms of picks you have to give up. But I'm not about to pretend like I have any idea how Trubisky will turn out.

San Fran has a big smile on their face today. I hope Trubisky is the guy. Shouldn't take him long to jump ahead of Bob Avellini and Bobby Joe Douglas among the Bears career passing leaders. LOL.

My biggest concern at this point is there's no way the Bears have the coaching staff to develop a QB, so Pace either has to have a plan where he replaces everybody after 2017, or, more likely, they just have to rely on the guy to do it himself.

They totally got worked and I think the "you have to get the guy" mentality is the reason why so many teams stay bad for a long time. The vast majority of good QBs only win when their team is filled with excellent players and you only get a lot of excellent players by using all your picks wisely.

if Pace though that Trubisky is simply a pro-caliber starting QB, then it doesn't make sense. But if Pace thinks Trubisky is a franchise QB, then it absolutely makes sense.

Additionally, it's not about calling bluffs. Pace didn't tip his hand as to who he was targeting, and most of the smoke was from the defensive side of the ball. The analysts were sure he traded up for Thomas, no mention of Trubisky at all. Pace was keeping quiet. So, did Pace just play a hunch that someone was trying to trade up for Trubisky? Did he operate based on rumor? or maybe, just maybe, did Cleveland/Houston/KC call him on the day of the draft or somewhere thereabouts, and inquire about a trade? I'm sure he got a call from someone and figured that they'd be calling the Niners, this was not the Niners lying.

I don't get the idea that it's too accepted to lie to other teams about offers, anyway. One can simply go to the source, find out your trade partner was lying and then that team's GM is branded as a liar and nobody wants to do business with him.

eh, the converse is more true. teams filled with good players and no QBs have to be perfect in everything that they do, or must have transcendent players at important positions that never ever get hurt.

tough to do when they all lie to each other, then suddenly nobody can do business with each other and the league shuts down.

well, if they all lie to each other, and I mean blatantly lie, then it breaks down and you can't trust anyone, which may very well be the case.
