Harper's contract will expire when I'm 57 years old

...so you think the Phils would be better off paying Harper 330 mil over a 5 year contract instead of a 13 year contract or something to that effect?

No I think he just thought this was an interesting fact.

No, I'm just putting into perspective (for myself) how insanely long a 13 year contract is.

My bad. I'm still just livid.

Yeah I’m 53 and my son is 19. He text me today and noted that when the contract ends I’ll be 66 and he’ll be 32. I just sat there stunned looking at it.

I'd be totally ignoring this had a miracle happened & Bryce signed with the Cubs. However, that didn't happen, so I'm reading it with an open mind.

As pissy as I feel about this, I took some solace from thinking that Cards fans should be even more pissed than us.

- Their team makes almost as much money as the Cubs

- They aren't even in the luxury tax

- They get extra draft picks anyway, so that doesn't impact them as much

- Much of their success is dependent upon pitchers who could all go *poof* at any time

- They only have one year of Goldschmidt, so their window is now

- Their OF could really, really suck this year

My darkhorse prediction is that neither side likes this relationship within the first three seasons, and the Cubs' brass gets to look like geniuses when really they were just being cheap.

I think Bryce gets traded and the relationship goes south at some point. He's probably a DH by year 6 or 7. Maybe he moves to 1B.

It sucks that the Cubs missed out, but at least we have Heyward in RF, amirite?

I think that article is trying real hard to say Harpers best days are behind him, but it would be hilarious and make me feel better about the whole thing.

It would also make me feel better if Jason Heyward could hit the broadside of a barn but we can’t all get what we want can we

I'll be 57 years old when it expires also and now hate you for pointing that out :(

To be fair, refusing to sign an affordable 26-year-old superstar who wants to play here is only like the third or fourth grossest thing about this offseason. I mean, I can't even be annoyed about it.

I am not particularly bothered the Cubs didn't sign Harper. I didn't feel like he was a necessity, and I actually have quite a bit of confidence that our existing players will rebound/develop nicely.

The why is really vexing, though. Especially since that alleged lack of financial flexibility has kept the FO from addressing more pressing needs.

as ssr has pointed out several times, the sad truth is that picking up hamels’ option instead of signing harper makes perfect sense once you realize we also have no money for next season.

this organization in no way deserves our attention.

I haven't been paying much attention to see how much this has been talked about, but it makes perfect sense: We had a little money left to spend this year (well, we actually had a lot to spend but the Ricketts family decided otherwise), but we have nothing for the future. Bryce was never happening. And nothing good is going to happen in the future. This team is in the process of derailing. Better hope we turn things around with some of the guys already on the roster.

I miss optimistic Duke.

It's like you joined the DC universe.

I don't think we'll have to deal with him for a long time.
