And?

What team is regularly beating up on the best pitchers? What if there is a team and they have a crappy record overall? It's almost like this a classic example of misconstruing sample size...

we need to come to grips with no longer being the best team in baseball and no longer having the best pitcher in baseball. It may come back, but the super hot start will at least get them into the playoffs. I have lost pretty much all confidence that the playoffs will end well. This funk has lasted way too long to be considered just a blip. They're still a "good" team, but it sure doesn't feel great anymore.

How long has this funk been... 2 weeks? Maybe 3.. while banged up with injuries?

We need to see the silver lining here- Kris Bryant. Anthony Rizzo. Addison Russell. Willson Contreras. Jake Arrietta. Jon Lester. John Lackey. Hector Rondon. Pedro Stropp. Javier Baez- we've got the chips for an epic rebuild. And there are always plenty of reclamations to be had. I know, I'm not particularly excited about watching guys like Chris Coghlan, John Andreoli, and Stephen Bruno leading the big league charge, but when 2021 rolls around, and we have a new crop of young stars taking the field, it will all have been worth it.

I mean as a whole they've been playing slightly over .500 since early May. But that's heavily weighted by the current 12-14 stretch since June 5. (Wait that's why arbitrary sample sizes don't work? I think I get it now)

Yeah thought we had a good record in May.

Despite how awful we feel they've been, they're only 3 games under .500 over their last 17 games, and 16-15 since the start of June.

For as bad as they've been it could be a whole hell of a lot worse. While the Cubs have basically been playing .500 ball over the last month, our two biggest division rivals have been treading water trying to reach or stay just above .500 all season long.

Honestly, when they are making Moneyball 2, the movie needed some more tension and antagonism. This will be perfect for character arc.

Duke, you are good with numbers. I am not. Is an eight-game lead on July 3, playoff percentage-wise, a really sizeable lead or do the Cubs sort of have to start playing better relatively quickly?

This I don't understand. As crapshooty as the playoffs were when we were the Murderers' Row Yankees, they are still that crapshooty. So regardless of how you are feeling about the team right now, I don't get being completely down on our chances in the playoffs.

This isn't specifically directed at you, because you are a sane person. But I kinda hope this continues and we back into the playoffs with 89 wins and then win the World Series so that the tryptamines of the world have to reconcile this Cubs team winning the World Series and them hating this team for the vast majority of the season.

No, I'm capable of being annoyed when a team under performs, being aloof to everything doesn't make you some how special.

A guy that has been bitching and moaning since early May about the team with the best record in baseball calling someone else aloof, that's cute. Do you think I'm not annoyed? I'm incredibly annoyed. The last two weeks have been infuriating. And I'm not happy about the team looking less impressive than they seemed. You, however, have been completely miserable all season.

They look really tired. This is probably the thoughest part of their schedule between no off days and the competition. Tha ASB could come at a better time.

The blip hasn't lasted that long. The 26-24 record since the 25-6 start has been thrown around but if you break it down its 22-14 (99 win pace) then 4-10. 14 games is not a long enough stretch go draw any meaningful conclusions

Not time to freak out? We've seen our once robust 11 game division lead dwindle to a slightly less robust 8 games! And all of our starting pitchers are broken. Me have to prepare for the worst. Call every free agent starting pitcher who's had an above replacement level season in the past 5 years! Jair Jurrjens? Shaun Marcum? That former Mets 1st round pick who belly flopped and latched on with the White Sox and threw a perfect game and then spiraled into obscurity. Is Edwin Jackson available? We are still paying him. Chris Narveson has to be floating around the Brewers system somewhere. Offer up Jimenez for him. I know it's an overpay for a guy who hasn't pitched in the big leagues in like 5 years and was never very good, but we need this. We can still do this. It's going to be a downhill battle (not a misprint,) but we can do this.

what if 2015 ends up being the best cubs season of the theo era

there is much to do this season and things could still turn out great, but this is absolutely the reason last year's attitude of "well actually we're a year ahead of schedule so who cares what happens" was so infuriating. we had a chance to win last year and did nothing in the nlcs. that's a disappointing outcome. every chance to win is sacred.

What if the Tribune bought back the Cubs, fired Jed and Theo and rehired Jim Hendry, who in turn conducted a 3 way trade involving Addison Russell, Wellington Castillo, Eloy Jimenez, and Ian Happ for Matt Garza, C.C. Sabbathia, and Brian McCann? And then a gigantic meteor crashed into earth, wiping out all life, so it didn't matter anyway. That would sure show us for not flipping out a little more over the NLCS.

I'd rather take that attitude than walk around feeling crushed that we blew it. Then if we never get back to that point the pain is less severe or at least more spread out.

Are you talking about fans with this attitude? I don't think the players or management had that attitude.

talking about fans. that said, i do have a friend of a friend who works in analytics for the cubs who used basically those exact words ("this is a year ahead of schedule so whatever we get is a bonus") and seemed to imply it was very much the organizational mindset. i'm sure that's just the case for people off the field, though.
