I'll say Ventura because their FO is more incompetent (not that he's a good manager just that they seem to make moves for the sake of making moves more) and their unsustainable start gave them some sort of irrational hope of competing and being actually good when they really are a pretty shitty team.

They are both boobs, but Matheny has made the playoffs in each of his 4 seasons and has won a pennant. Last year's team won 100 games despite injuries galore. This year despite an uneven start, they have scored the most runs in the NL (2nd most in baseball) and have the 3rd best run differential in the NL (4th best in baseball) and are 1 game out of the 2nd Wild Card spot.

 

Even if his contribution to those teams is minimal or even negative, it would be really hard for the Cardinals to fire him this season with that track record.

 

The White Sox on the other hand just got through a stretch where they finished over .500 9 of the previous 12 years when they hired Ventura. In his first year, the White Sox were in first place from May through late September when they collapsed with a 4-9 finish to miss out on the playoffs. Since then, his team has finished with 3 of the 4 worst records for the White Sox since 1990. This year after a hot start they've managed to completely collapse and go 6-20 to fall under .500 and several games out of a playoff spot.

 

I mean based on track record alone, it has to be Ventura right?
