Here is where the Pirates team slash line looks right now (before tonight):

.284/.361/.434

From that new statcast-based xBABIP, here is what they should be expected to be at:

.264/.342/.403

They have a .339 BABIP. They've been incredibly lucky. Matt Joyce and Sean Rodriguez both are OPS'ing over 1.000. They've also played the easiest schedule in the league so far. Their pitching staff is horrible. They are nothing. They don't deserve our attention.

Their BABIP would be the highest ever over a full season since 1900. The 1930 Cardinals have the record at .332. The Red Sox are at .346 right now also.

The Red Sox also have a similar disparity between their BABIP and their statcast-based xBABIP. Ours is about the same.

also the cardinals still actually have a better run differential

The Cardinals are bumslayers. 8-16 w/ -26 RD against >.500 teams, compared to 7-6 and -5 for the Pirates. Duke's point about quality of schedule is definitely illustrated here though, yesterday was the first time the Pirates have played a >.500 team outside the division.

After pulling within 4.5 games they're now back to 7.5 back

Other than Gerritt Cole they have no starter with an ERA under 4.3, or a FIP under 4.5
