Yeah so it's the Blackhawks offseason. They are like the high school baseball player who finally gets to experience a decent spring break. This offseason will probably be of most value to guys like Hossa. He's an old man but still quite good. Edited by jersey cubs fan

I think it'll help the defensive guys too. As great as they hold up each postseason, it can't hurt to have a few less weeks of taking 100mph pucks to the body on a nightly basis for guys like Keith and Hammer.

The Hawks losing also saved a lot of jobs in St. Louis. Hopefully they'll give Backes like $10 mill for 10 years. Hitchcock is terrible that the hockey coaching thing.

Do hockey players golf the same way that they shoot? Not all LH shots are actually LH for anything else. I wonder because my daughter is left handed but field hockey everyone plays right handed so I'm thinking that it might be easier for her to hit a golf ball right handed since it's a similar motion to hitting a hockey ball.

It would be great if he did make the team. There's a clause in his contract that he can be loaned back to his team in Sweden if he doesn't make the team out of camp. I may be getting my Swedes mixed up- there will be at least 5 in camp this year- but his game is likened to Nick Leddy.

So, now they're signing non Swedes?

There are highlights of these guys on youtube but they're pretty much just them scoring goals. Not super useful for seeing what a defenseman can do. It seems like Kempny has been pretty highly sought after. I get a sense that he might make the team too depending on how things shake out.

Shaw was always a long show but is this the nail in the coffin?

Not really, Panik isn't going to make a lot of money. The last nail will come when they see the salary cap and realize that they can't even pay Shaw $2.5 mil which would be the minimum they could offer him. There's also speculation that another team might give Shaw an offer sheet for $3.5 mil. This would only cost that team their 2nd round pick which is probably what Shaw would command in a trade.

Shaw wants to stay and the Hawks want to keep him but the Hawks can't (and really shouldn't) pay Shaw what he could get from someone else.

How good is/will he be?

I've heard people try to compare the KHL to the NHL and it sounds a little like the KHL is to the NHL what the Japanese League is to MLB with people calling it 4A. Just like there are marginal MLB players that can thrive in Japan, there are some fringe NHL guys that are stars in the KHL. Cam Barker led the league in points among defensemen. Then again, there are guys like Ichiro that come to MLB and have really good careers as well as a few serviceable players.

The Hawks don't need Kempny to be a star. He might be able to give the same level of production as Oduya- I would think that would be his ceiling. Like anyone else, he'll have to adjust to the smaller ice which is a bigger deal for defensemen.

Panarin came from the KHL, so there's definitely potential to be gotten from there.

I don't think anyone has seen him play unless they were watching the World's where he was one of the most impressive players on a Czech team that was the surprise of the tournament supposedly.

But I love the Blackhawks commitment to upgrading defense with Kempny, Forsling and Dahlstrom. If Bowman saw the defensive talent out there this offseason and that influenced his decision to not upgrade more on defense last trade deadline, I feel a little better about the decision even thought it might have cost us a Cup run. Likely at least 1 of those guys will end up a top 4 player
