he got a deal like last week

yeah but were they in agreement about it

If I recall, if they settled via arbitration process its not guaranteed, whereas as agreement outside of arbitration is guaranteed.

It’s only non-guaranteed if you cut him for baseball reasons

Did they agree to arbitration with him already?

Yes, they agreed on a contract outside of arbitration.

You knew that when you signed it

Well yea, since it was an agreement outside of arb, right?

Hypothetically if that had let it go all the way to arb, they could still cut bait. But if they didn't they can't.

Answered my question. I missed the agreement last week.

I didn't watch, but it seems like from what you posted and David in the other thread, Mark Gonzales' camera is not the only thing out of focus.

well, he probably didn't have a script, but he was definitely coached and given some talking points. he sounded like he was a robot reading a script the whole time, but, as others have mentioned, he kinda always sounds like that. it's also entirely possible he looked directly at the reporter he was answering when giving these canned responses.

It was pretty bad... I listened to it, and he definitely had scripted answers (someone probably coached him). The reporters didn't ask any hard-hitting questions or follow-ups either.

I still don't understand the point of having him on this team. You can educate the players on DV and put in place extensive training and new protocols without having him on this team. I'm glad they're trying to prevent this from ever happening again, but the organization still looks bad while he's here.

Yeah I listened on the radio. Maybe I’d have felt differently if I could see his face.

It seems like a situation where easily impressed people are going to be impressed by him actually discussing the topic with even 1% depth, and folks who don't want him on the team are never going to hear any words from him that will change their minds. So I guess kudos to Russell for not going full Chapman's first interview about it, but 'not actively making things worse' isn't improving the situation.

Personally, that's not true. horsefeathers, it would an insanely refreshing miracle if an abuser was actually upfront about what he did wrong and actually was sorry and wanted to be/do better and what he was actually doing/has done to be better. Not that it would absolve him, but holy horsefeathers, it WOULD make at least a bit of a difference. Dude, however, isn't even gonna sniff that, as per usual with these dudes.

Hey now, Northam read a few excerpts from Roots!

(Racism as opposed to DV, but you get the point)

Would you have changed course on wanting him on the team? If so what would that have looked like? What you're describing would be better no doubt, but it's hard for me to imagine even a completely transparent and honest and truly rehabilitating Russell giving an answer that would cross that line for me. Especially given how much of the damage he inflicted was in manipulating his partners, the harm/apology/harm cycle, etc.

^^Nope, for me.

Then again, I'm having a hard time believing Russell can be rehabilitated while remaining a highly paid pro baseball player. Seems to me the permission structure is still there for him; just mouth some platitudes & all is forgiven.

Would I WANT him on the team? No. Could I somehow tolerate him on the team and not actively despise the organization enabling him? Probably.

But we all know this dude is never gonna do something like that.

I let my subscription to the Athletic expire. Can anyone give me the cliff notes summary of what Russell's misstep was? Was it baseball related, or something regarding his behavior?

https://theathletic.com/835775/2019/02/25/letters-from-camp-yu-darvish-gets-into-the-swing-of-things-while-addison-russell-missteps/

He said something to the effect of "now the hard stuff is behind me and I can just play"

Not that I expect anything more enlightened, but don't celebrities have people to help them not sound so tone deaf? When I tried to Google it, it doesn't seem like it got a ton of traction, so it'll probably go unnoticed.

Even his hair wants nothing to do with him.
