I will say, Argentina has been clearly the better team here today.

hot take

Just watching the game and thinking to myself "oh right, this is why I wanted Poland to win, because they aren't very good"

This feels a lot like that Belgium-USA game from 2014, except that Poland seems less dangerous than that USA team was.

Poland have a multiple card lead on Mexico in fair play points, so Mexico does need that 3rd goal even if Argentina scores again to even up GD. It also means that Mexico needs 2 if Poland and Argentina trade goals.

Mexico being eliminated due to fair play seems the most poetic scenario.

if mexico misses out because of yellow cards we have to find out who got the decisive yellows and tell kellyn acosta immediately so he can begin to ruin their lives

TT’s recs are good. Grant Wahl has also been doing great stuff on his substack.

I really enjoy In Soccer We Trust with Jimmy Conrad, Heath Pearce and Charlie Davies. They get some real good guests, aren't afraid to criticize when necessary, and obviously have the perspective of guys who have been there and done that

Not sure how people feel about Men In Blazers, but they've been doing a 6 part series with the actor who plays Coach Beard in Ted Lasso covering the history of the USMNT which I enjoyed. Brought back memories and reminded me of things I forgot or didn't know about at the time. The sub-series is called Go! Go! USA, but its part of the main Men In Blazers podcast.

They also do a collab with Tommy Vietor from Pod Save the World about the corruption and grift surrounding the World Cup. I found it pretty interesting as someone who knows next to nothing nil about soccer.

Incredible drama. Love moments like that where there are so many scenarios you have to calculate in real time to figure out what happens if another goal is scored. Was a bit annoyed that the announcers were not on top of those scenarios. For a good 10 minutes they kept saying Mexico was through because they had more goals scored which was not at all the case. They they realized it came down to fair play but it took them another 5 minutes to know where the yellow cards for both teams stood. Then when Saudi Arabia scored Ian Darke acted like it eliminated Mexico when it literally did not change anything regarding what Mexico needed to do to advance.

I guess its easier when you are sitting watching at home to figure it out, but you'd think the announcers would be prepped ahead of time for a completely plausible 2-0 ARG, 2-0 MEX result.

Anyways, my 88 year old grandfather was born in Poland and moved to the States after living in a German work camp during WW2. Got him all psyched up when I told him the Poland games were going to be on Fox over the air (has never had cable). Just talked to him and while he was disgusted at how bad they looked was absolutely thrilled that Poland advanced. Put a smile on my face to hear him so happy.

Congrats on advancing, Poland, despite looking awful against one of the 3 best teams in the tournament. Your next opponent is...France.

So we probably know enough to figure the most likely path for the US. It's simple really, just beat the Netherlands, then Argentina, then Brazil, then France, and you win the world cup.

In fairness, I think the USMNT is good enough to give any of those teams a game, at least until Shaq Moore comes on in the 70th minute.

Sucks but I'll be thrilled if we can get by the Dutch and reach the quarters again. Good momentum heading into the 2026 cycle.

Half the knockout field is set now, 4 UEFA, 1 CONMEBOL, 1 CONCACAF, one CAF, and one Oceanic team.

Australia is in AFC now

No, they're still in Oceania, they just play Asian teams because playing Oceania qualifying was like playing Aruba six times in a qualifying cycle.
