Rather than ask where the needs are this offseason for the Bears, the better question seems to be where we are actually okay heading into next year.

QB, WR (I'm not considering it at all likely that Jeffery is gone next year), RB, TE, 1 S, 1 CB, an OLB, a couple interior DL, probably a couple guys on the OL who are fine, how fine depends on Long

I'm not secure enough in any position* to turn away help anywhere. Let's just get the best players we can in draft or FA.

* QB I wouldn't fill with a vet, but would definitely draft a Cutler replacement if I thought the value was there in any round.

Also, Mike Groh is going to thr LA Rams as WR Coach/ Passing Game Coordinator. They could have blocked that move, assuming he was still under contract.

He was a Trestman era leftover, the only such offensive coach. Two D coaches still around. (Including Hurtt who they blocked from going to Miami).

Comcast is showing a special on my favorite Bears team ever (hint: it's not the 85 team) right now. This is awesome.

thought this was worth pointing out (and i honestly don't know how big a number that is compared to the rest of the league - just that it's obviously no green bay situation) as i think sometimes some people get carried away too much with the whole build the team through the draft thing. we need to be good at getting good players in all the ways we can get them.

Yeah Green Bay is the extreme side of it. I do believe that the best plan for long term success is to build more through the draft but make smart FA signings. Like McPhee was a relatively unheralded FA signing that paid big dividends. You aren't always going to find Pro Bowl quality starters on the cheap in FA, but more moves like that and less Jared Allen type signings. Occasionally you are just going to have a hole or holes you need an impact player in and might have to overpay for a premiere FA but if you are drafting well enough you should be able to make that signing without killing your cap space.

Off the top of my head it seems like their D is much more homegrown than their O, with the one big defensive outsider being Ware. Balance is good, but being able to draft well I think is kind of the pre-requisite. The Broncos built a great team and then finished the job with FAs it seems.

Off the top of my head the Bears have seemingly been alright when it comes to trades and signings. There are obvious busts, but the drafting aspect just sticks out more because they've been SO bad at it for so long.

Yup, basically. You can be draft/development heavy. You can mix great drafting with veteran acquisitions. You pretty much can't only get veteran acquisitions and win, at least not consistently and not on the big stage.
