@CarrieMuskat: Hoyer has seen #Cubs linked to nearly every free agent on market. Says "I think some of the rumors about us are a little bit extreme"

@ESPNChiCubs: Jed Hoyer: "We will look to add multiple starting pitchers at various levels of the organization."

@CarrieMuskat: #Cubs Hoyer says: "We're likely to focus a lot of our resources on pitching and pitching depth"

@ESPNChiCubs: Hoyer on spending $$: “We have the means to fill the holes we want to fill.” But tempered it some after saying that.

@ESPNChiCubs: Hoyer:“There has to be a level of common sense when thinking about what we’re going to do” That should take care of the Greinke&Price tweets

Is five years/80 million for Shark a realistic prediction? I know his WHIP was much better than his ERA indicates. But a pitcher getting 80 million coming off a year of an ERA at nearly five seems steep.

Plus he'll be 31 next year, and realistically has only had two seasons where he performed at an 18 million year rate. A few months ago I thought Shark would have to settle for an incentive laden one year deal, and then possibly take advantage of the weak pitching class next off season. Looks like I was wayyyyy off.

The fact he's got less miles on his arm than most guys his age(or even a bit younger) is one of the main reasons he's getting a bit of a pass for his horrible 2015. The velocity is fine with him too, so I think teams are more or less just writing it off as a bad year and will still give him a payday. 5/80 is definitely higher than I'd have thought a few months ago, but I would be OK if we gave him that. Reuniting him with Bosio.....I'd say he's got a realistic chance to even live up to that deal. Which is hard to say with any pitcher on a 5 year deal.

SP Jeff Samardzija may be among their offseason free agent targets, write Paul Sullivan and Colleen Kane of the Chicago Tribune. As well, Bruce Levine of CBS Chicago writes that the team may be interested in Alex Gordon or Jason Heyward.

Justin Upton and David Price? Hahaha, yeah, sure. Why not?

Is part of their predictions Ricketts striking oil during the renovations?

Part of their prediction must be either trading Soler or putting Schwarbs at catcher.

I don't think they put that much thought into it

a link from MLB.com weighs in

I don't hate it...

also, I didn't realize the Cards just made a 1 billion$ TV deal.

"2. Jordan Zimmermann to the Cubs. This is a way for the Cubs to augment their starting stash at a much lesser price than Price. Zimmermann is durable, is potentially due for a bounceback year and would give the Cubs a strong rotation alignment from A(rrieta) to Z(immermann), with an L(ester) in between. He's also from suburban Chicago (otherwise known as Wisconsin)."

on Cubs.com they are talking about an A.J. Pollock trade for Castro and Soler... Interesting idea, but I am not sure the Diamondbacks would even touch that deal.

Really don't want Zimmerman. Down year combined with the fact that he'll be entering year 7ish after his first TJS makes me scared. A lot of people give TJ arms 8 years before they break again. I don't know how accurate that is, but it scares me enough to stay away from a longterm deal considering 2 TJS is usually a death sentence.

I'm gonna predict Rich Hill signs with the Cubs this week. Reports on he's close to a deal with a team for 1 year 5M deal. Theo signed Hill in Boston , and Jared Porter saw a lot of Hill last year. Could be a strong potential swing arm next season.

cubs were trying hard to get him from boston around the deadline

Hill would be cool as the new Travis Wood with a bit more upside if he was forced into a starting role, but it would surprise me if 1) the Cubs guaranteed him a rotation spot and 2) that Hill would sign this early without a guarantee of a rotation spot.

Plus I could bring my RIch Hill jersey out of retirement.

rich hill feels like such a good bet to either be really good or flame out immediately that i kind of wonder if you could go ahead and "guarantee" him a rotation spot with the knowledge that if it turns out you don't want him in the rotation, he's going to be so bad that no one is going to give you any trouble for going back on your promise. give him hammel's spot and have jason in the wood role to start the season.

i would love to sign rich hill because i always liked him and it is fun that he is good again, but it just seems like such a long-shot that this actually works for any length of time. on a one-year deal, though, who cares sign him.
