Well I'm not gonna get too much into Emery-grading, but I'd really be curious what specifically is so concerning about Pace career to date. There's a lot of noise two games in, but what sticks out to you as a missed opportunity or bad move from his signings or picks, other than the fact we can't yet grade his top pick.

He was never an amateur scout specialist and the team he left sucks.

As bad as a perception as people have of Emery's draft picks, only 2 from the last 2 drafts are not currently on the team (Khaseem Greene and Jordan Mills), and Mills was probably one of the last couple of cuts. Obviously, you can argue that it's only been 1 draft and Pace hasn't had a chance, but it's not like he jettisoned all of Emery's picks. And guys like Bostic, McClellin, Wilson, Vereen, and Sutton (because of perceived scheme fit before taking the field) could have all been cut. Yet several of those guys are starting and playing key roles, over guys who Pace brought in like White (injury), McDonald (woman beater), Foster (cut), and Porter (hurt).

But yeah, Pace is getting a hard time even though it's early because of the McDonald signing, the 7th overall pick being a non-factor this year, and fairly or not, he's getting it for not getting rid of Cutler. I've said recently that my biggest issue is that I don't think this team is in a better place than it was when Pace too over. Granted, it hasn't been that long, but the QB situation is still the same. Still no pass rush. Still shaky back end of the defense. And then you throw in the fact that Forte and Jeffery could walk, Bennett could force his way out of town, and this team could potentially be worse in 2016.

How do you blame Pace for the QB situation being the same?

Also, those Emery guys playing "key roles" on a horrible team isn't much of a defense of Emery.

If you are counting his Saints record I can get that. He definitely didn't sound appealing to me when his name surfaced. That being said, none of his picks have immediately looked like embarrassments. Obviously none have busted out of the gates as early stars, but Amos and Langford particularly seem solid early. Most have faith in Grassus long term role (if not the actual strategy of picking a C early) and unfortunately well have to wait on White to be healthy. Goldman its early still...

As far as his FA work... It looks okay. Nothing to really cast doubt one way or total confidence the other. And two guys who most fans wanted to see gone from the last regime are arguably two of the more consistent players on this horrid D early on.

He does deserve flack for the McDonald signing, but from a football standpoint I don't really think there was an opportunity cost for taking that risk.

1. Trading a 6th round pick for a backup UDFA Tight End who had a good chance of not making it past Houston's final cuts anyway.

2. Letting White sit for two months to try and "heal up" the stress fracture, instead of doing the surgery back in June and having him available right away after 6 weeks on the PUP, instead of it being a season-ender. I don't fault him entirely for this though, as if the fracture heals on it's own White is playing right now. Still, the fact that his first-round pick isn't on the field doesn't look too good for a new GM.

3. The over-the-top secrecy regarding injuries and just information in general, although this is likely on Fox just as much as it is Pace.

4. Not bolstering several positions of need, especially DL and CB, and also WR after the entire corps went down in preseason.

On the other hand, assuming White does eventually pan out I think Pace had a pretty decent first draft. Out of the Goldman, Grasu, Langford, and Amos picks, two are starting already and the other two are being groomed. Time will tell if they're actually any good. He also didn't listen to the meatballs and jettison Cutler right away when there were no better options available.

All that said, so far I'm not too impressed, but he still has plenty of time to win me over.

Maybe that is annoying but it's hardly a knock against either guy.

True, and I suppose #2 isn't either. I guess I turned it into a "what annoys me about Pace so far" post.

Of the positions to gripe about addressing, you missed the biggest one, IMO (OL). But addressing all our needs in one season is a tricky task. You could instead spread out the McPhee signing and make more small signings, but an impact player is arguably more important than a few extra role players vs their replacement-level counterparts.

You could also be more aggressive with the cap and leverage the future, which is what New Orleans did and they won a SB, but that eventually did catch up to them. No amount of FA signing was makin this team a SB contender, but in future seasons we may see that more aggressive approach.

I'm just very neutral on him. A trade of a sixth round pick and sharing of injury info is not enough to move me.

Yet Emery and Trestman were open books and it didn't make them better at their jobs (not worse).

I don't personally. But it's pretty clear tons of Bears fans do. And Pace clearly at least seriously thought about trading Cutler and trading up for Mariota, whether that really got anywhere or not, it was out there and if keeping Cutler goes bad (and it will because they probably won't be very good this or next year) then many will put that on Pace for not fixing that.

how could he have changed the QB situation? I say he gets kudos for keeping it the same. The QB position was not one of the biggest actual worries, though a huge superficial one.

that's perception, you know it and i know it. the right decision not being the popular decision doesn't make Pace a bad GM, in the eyes of the McCaskeys, anyway. as bad as the cutler [expletive] goes, it will never be as bad as it would without cutler. the long-term success of Cutler is what may actually be Pace's undoing, if he can't put the right pieces around him, at least enough to be a playoff team.

you know this feeling that the bears have no shot to win, this is how it will be in the post-cutler world as well, provided we don't snag a replacement for him soon. Jared Goff may not be the guy, but we have to try. Personally, I want to see what Fales can do. He was the most accurate passer in the NCAA in 2012, while also leading in YPA.

i don't think he meant the fourth-rounder

Sadly, he'll be a top 10 pick

not if he continues to play terribly. he's slipping down draft boards right now, and quickly.

top 3.

i say take best OT available and build your line. if you do that, you at least start to claim an identity.
