It definitely was just bad luck, mostly due to Walker's [expletive] throw and how Kang planted, but Coghlan's is basically Public Enemy #2 in South Korea now.

The real unfortunate thing about it is if Kang just jumped the slide like every other player in MLB would have, not only is he not injured, but it's not a double play and Coghlan is praised for the breakup slide.

He did play it really poorly.

Pirates rookie shortstop Jung Ho Kang suffered a broken left leg and torn knee ligament in Thursday's 9-6 loss to the Chicago Cubs and will miss the rest of the regular season and postseason.

The news made headlines in Kang's home country. News1, a Korean news organization, described Coghlan's slide as a "murderous tackle."

Another issue is the takeout slide is illegal in Korean baseball so Kang wasn't anticipating it and Korean fans think it was a dirty play.

Yeah, and pretty much everyone I've heard address the play on TV/radio/internet other than Pirates fans and Koreans has expressed the same thing.

It was an aggressive slide for sure, but Kang should have jumped while letting his momentum carry him toward the outfield (instead of jumping toward 1B and planting), which like you said, is what 99.9% of middle infielders do. Coghlan said that's what he was expecting, and I believe him.

Wasn't anticipating it? He's played 125ish games in the majors this year. One would think he'd seen a take out slide or three before last night

I don't feel strongly about it, but it wouldn't bother me in the least if it was banned in the states as well.

The majority of his playing time this year has been as a 3B. He's only played 55 games at SS this year, sporadically. And you don't just learn to hop out of the way of a take out slide by seeing a couple of them. It's an instinctive play you learn to make over time.

Yeah, the seven plus years he spent in the KBO have done a lot more to engrain the routine of turning a DP than the 400 inning at SS this year, no doubt.

Absolutely nothing except a very brief thread about in on Reddit from 4 days ago that's basically dead that linked to this:

That guy says it was going to be posted "on the website," presumably meaning here:

http://pittsburgh.cbslocal.com/category/sports/

But I can't find anything there. He then uses his feed to basically ask Cubs reporters to confirm or deny the comments. Soooooo, yeah, seems like complete BS.
