Gleyber Torres at Low-A at age 18: .333/.432/.391, 6/7 SB, 12/17 BB/K

BP wrote about Torres today:

Gleyber Torres, SS, Cubs (South Bend, A-): 2-3, 3B, BB. Hitting .318/.423/.379 in the freezing Midwest League in April would be impressive for any player and even more impressive for any shortstop. But when it’s done by an 18-year-old in his first full-season league, it easily becomes one of the more impressive things to be done this season. Torres is remarkably talented, and scouts have lauded his hit tool potential since his days as an amateur. What they may not have anticipated is the way he’s controlling the strike zone, with 12 walks to 17 strikeouts now through 19 games. There’s a reason a player this far from the majors was ranked 8th overall in the deepest farm system in baseball this offseason.

Just a reminder, in Starlin Castro's age 18 season, he played in the AZL.

Addison Russell was actually drafted at approximately the age Gleyber is today (18.138).

That's ridiculous, he really could be something special. If he keeps showing an advanced approach like this I wonder how aggressive they will be with promoting him?

Torres is 2/3 so far. OPS up to .823. He's pretty darn impressive.

Cubs #2 prospect if we consider Addison graduated?

Ben Badler loves him some Gleyber:

@BenBadler: Four-hit night for Cubs shortstop Gleyber Torres, who finishes April hitting .352 in Low-A. He's the same age as a high school senior.

Yes, but I'm not the right person to ask - Torres was already fifth for me last offseason, behind Soler, Bryant, Russell and Schwarber.

i don't know how high gleyber will end up on prospect lists if he hits well the rest of this year. on the one hand, it's crazy impressive for any 18 year old to post good numbers in short season ball. but i think he's regarded as a really polished and smart player without a huge ceiling. kind of like castro, i guess.

How does he project defensively long term? Do most guys think he can remain a SS?

From the AZL Top 20 prospects last offseason:

Torres projects to be able to stay at shortstop. While not flashy, he has good actions and an arm that grades as average to slightly above.

From the BA Prospect Handbook:

His hands, actions and above-average arm fit for shortstop, and his internal clock helps him make routine plays look routine. is range may fit better at second base, where his bat should carry him.

What separates him from Castro and most prospects who are extremely young for their league is his plate discipline and approach.
