Only 6 more years to pay pujols

You'd think he would have wanted a contract that paid him sooner.

you mean before he dies of old age

Not allowed to make fun of the Angels because they won the division last year.

Random thought but if Hamliton starts hitting again and the Rangers entertained training him for prospects at the break would you go for it only being on the hook for $8 million over 2.5 years?

AFAIK, Hamilton has only hurt himself. If that's correct and he's basically freely available...sure.

Nah, they're doomed forever because they have some guys lacking in surplus value.

The only reason that isn't that big of a problem for them is that they happened upon the greatest example of surplus value and the greatest young player any of us will probably ever see so lol.

I'm not gonna say there was no skill to winding up with him, but the rest of their track record with drafting and development lately really doesn't help their case.

In short, it's entirely justifiable to make fun of them.

They are also an incredibly rich team, so it's not a problem at all.

Even incredibly rich teams have finite resources

How'd they manage to win 98 games last year with all those rotten contracts on the book and an apparent shitty developmental system?

Well, when you have a guy who can get you 7 more wins than a run of the mill All Star, you can almost kinda sorta (and I really mean almost kinda sorta, because I realize how absurd that sounds) luck your way into that with a couple of other guys having pretty good years, which is kinda what happened there, right? The point isn't that they aren't capable of fielding a good team, especially not when they have Mike Trout...it's just that they're poorly managed. I don't think those things are mutually exclusive.

But I don't want to do this again because the Cubs are fun now.

SSR coveting the Angels leadership is one of the funniest things to me on here

they'll just write off those bad contracts

Nobody's coveting anything. I'm (still) laughing at you guys making fun of the Angels as they steamrolled the AL last year because they gave up some middling prospects for Huston Street

It's just silliness like the WHAT ARE THE DODGERS DOING thread? They're spending a lot of money that they have, how horrifying. I'm excited that we'll probably have some shitty $/WAR contracts on our books in the coming years.

t feels like just a few months ago you said you'd gladly trade organizations with LAA; maybe it was longer, i dunno, i can't remember everything

since their steamrolling that resulted in 0 playoff wins, they traded their 5-win 2B for a pitching prospect, which leads one to wonder if they do in fact have a limited budget

they have roughly $95M committed next year to...

Pujols - 1.8 WAR for the last calendar year

CJ Wilson - 1.2

Jered Weaver - 1.9

Hamilton - a member of the Texas Rangers organization

so they're set up pretty well to squander the prime years of a generational/all-time great player; if that's not worthy of derision, then i guess not really anything is

Well, the Angels looked like a lock for the playoffs at the time, so they were 1 up on us, and I'd still give them the advantage this year. A 2 year lead on playoffs is a pretty big deal. As is the knowledge that a team will spend rather than an assumption which looked a lot more faulty to me last year.

They sold Kendrick a year before FA after 2 disappointing years in '12 and '13. I'd imagine they didn't think he was the player he was last year, and stupidly thought something like Giavotella and Green could come close to his production. Same thing we did with DeRosa

that's a convenient assumption, but FG favors us (53% - 44%) and BP has the two teams as equals (56%)

It's my opinion. Sorry.

Where are those WAR numbers coming from?
