Even with a day off today, both Strop and Rondon are both on pace for over 100 appearances. This is the same argument as Friday, you can't simply go by 'not exhausted? Better throw him out there' or you'll burn out your best pen guys. They've needed a reprieve from either/both of the offense or the starting pitching and neither has cooperated, so the downside is middle relievers have to pitch in more important situations. Losing both Grimm and Ramirez at once means those middle relievers are going to be less reliable. This is a temporal thing, as we'll get some better/deeper starts, the offense will blow people out on occasion, and Grimm is on the mend.

I find the "on pace" argument to be meaningless. The Cubs have played a series of games that were close in the late innings. That won't always be the case. There will be stretches later in the season where the opposite happens and you can rest them then. Win the game in front of you.

what a ridiculous argument. burning them out now damages them in the near term, long before the convenient-to-your-argument stretch of low-leverage games

I don't think the argument is ridiculous, but this team is probably going to play in a lot of close games and hoping or expecting that they'll have some long stretch of blowouts is probably a bit optimistic.

They aren't going to be burnt out in any damaging way by throwing a couple days in a row.

But anyway, it didn't matter and there's a bunch more interesting things that happened in the game than some marginal bullpen decision.

Kris Bryant is awesome. Jon Lester is iffy and that's kinda scary but it's too early to tell anything. Alcantara is making plans to catch up with friends in Des Moines very, very soon.

And soon we'll have hugs for some guy named Sheffield or Waveland or something.

I've come to call him 1060 in my mind.

That's why this week is so important. Pirates especially.

Oh yay, Burnett tomorrow. I was just thinking how I never wanted to face anything but tough righties forever.

At least he should walk his share.
