I just hate how he spells his first name.

It's way better than Khris.

Who gets sent down, assuming there's no Castillo trade, when Bryant is called up in Mid April?

Bigger question… who gets dropped from the 40 man to bring up Bryant?

Well, Turner is going to the 60-day DL probably, Doubront is out of options and will have to be DFA'd, same with Britton.

Also Ryan Sweeney can be released at any time, between Coghlan, Denorfia, Alcantara, and Szczur, he's redundant.

Olt

I think Olt stays as a power bat off the bench. He can also back up Rizzo with tough lefties.

Rizzo was actually better against southpaws last year (300/.421/.507)

I do agree Olt's probably the best back up option for him, though.

If Olt can produce .260+, 25-30HR and play good defense, Bryant will start out in LF. I know that's probably not where he and Boras want him to be, but the lineup would really be stacked. That leaves Mendy as the Swiss Army knife and probably the minors for Junior Lake.

That's asking a lot (and it doesn't need to be that high)

I don't know if this is someone still not adjusted to the offensive environment, not adjusted to post 2012 Olt or a combination of both.

I think they went into ST with the microscope on Olt's hitting and recovery from the eye injury. He's doing better than last year, but still has a ways to go. I thought I read a scouting report somewhere which said because of KB's height, there was the potential for back problems down the line. Not ruling out he winds up at 3rd, but Olt gives you a real chance at 80HR from 3rd and LF. How great would that be?

I want Bryant in LF no matter what...whether it's Olt, or more likely Russell or Castro taking 3B. I'm just saying I don't see Olt hitting .260, but I also don't think his average needs to be that high for him to be a good player at 3B for us (and worth starting there over the LF platoon - with Bryant in LF).

Olt is not the power prospect he once was in the Rangers system. He'll max out at 30 home runs if he's able to reach it, but at his best he'll likely be a 20-25 homer guy, which means Kris Bryant will have to be steroid good for the 3B/LF combo to reach 80 home runs.

All that said, Brett did drop this hypothetical in his post about Olt...

if you use a WAR calculator in the current offensive environment, an elite defensive third baseman who manages a mere 90 OPS+ (10% worse than league average, and well within the hopes for Olt’s projections) is worth about 3.2 WAR over 150 games.

He used "elite" because Keith Law graded Olt's glove somewhere between 70-80 on the 20-80 scale in his most recent chat, apparently, so if his glove truly is elite (was always good, but not sure about elite) then he's saying even a poor offense version of Olt should still be worth a lot because of his defense.

11 players hit 30 home runs last year, 7-8 of them were 1B/DHes depending on how strictly you want to define Chris Carter.

HR leaders in case anyone forgot it's not 2003 anymore

Olts pace last year over a full 162 games would be 22.

I'm more optimistic on Olt than I have been in a while, but I don't think the math adds up here. Unless you're counting on Olt being +15 or better with the glove(not reasonable), he's not getting to 3 wins with a sub-average bat. Headley had a 102 OPS+ last year, and with +15 defense(he was actually +28 (!)) he's under 3 wins.

More likely in the optimistic scenario, Olt is Castellanos' bat at the other end of the defensive spectrum. That's still a 2+ win player and makes the same point re:Bryant, but I think we need to be careful about calling Olt a slight offensive tweak from being the right handed Valbuena.

I still sometimes think about the fact we got him, Grimm, N. Ramirez, AND CJ for just one half season of Garza and just laugh. Theo is pretty damn great at that whole trading thing.

You can pretty much exclude Hammel from that swap since we basically got him back via free agency anyway. Wasn't Dan Straily in that trade, also?

well that'd be silly. we did in fact trade him and a half season of him.

yeah, straily was in that deal.

I might still like Strop and Arrieta for half a season of Scott Feldman more than all of them, tbh.
