concerning. i like hammel in general, but it's hard to find a ton of spots for BOR guys on this team. hope this isn't seen as anything more than that.

Hammel's not a sexy name(like, say, Liriano) or a long term solution(like making a trade for a young guy), but I like him as a 2nd starter acquisition a lot. He was pitching at a 4 win pace as a Cub, and as long as his pitch mix didn't change in Oakland for health reasons, there's a lot of reasons that his 2nd time around can be similarly successful.

Pretty much. I fear that he ends up #3 rather than 4/5 (depending on what you call Hendricks in that scenario). Obviously, if he winds up our 2nd best starter behind Arrieta, that's the nightmare scenario.

I kind of like him better than anyone but Hendricks and Arrieta.

If he was actually the 3rd best SP we acquired this offseason, then I'm actually thrilled with this move, though.

I'm intrigued to see what he got considering he'd be the first SP off the market

I would guess somewhere around where Scott Feldman got last offseason with the Astros (3/30). Deal was front-loaded too (12, 10, 8)

Acquiring 3 SPs would make the Wada and Wood signings look real silly.

Likely, 1 of them isn't going to make the rotation. Both will probably battle for the 5th spot in Spring Training. Neither is making much money to care though.

Yeah, the only other SP that would make sense with Hammel and a bigger name in the fold would be somebody like Billingsley, maybe Anderson at best. That doesn't bother me personally, although I get the feeling I have a lot higher opinion of "best of Doubront/Turner/Wada/Wood/Straily" as a 5th starter than most.

I kinda just saw Wada as a bullpen guy.

3/30 sounds in the right range. He pitched very well for us too, Im fine with him coming back. Definitely want a guy better than him, but as long as he's the 2nd guy, that's fine.

I was thinking more, like 3/36

Wada is in the Villanueva role, he's only in the rotation if a bunch of people get hurt or he just blows everyone away.

With guys like Hammel, you're going to need more than 5. Even if he stays healthy, he's not a 32-start guy.
