I was talking both additional throws and more difficult throws, though WF makes a good point on knowing when to eat it. Ultimately I'm not sure of the author's point, his errors are going to be reflected in his defensive numbers.

Yeah, getting to more balls doesn't necessarily mean more errors. Looking at 3B from last year, there's not a correlation between the UZR and errors.

Too lazy to do an all-time test, but I don't think that "he gets to more balls" is an excuse for his error rate. Now, whether his range makes the errors easier to correct (hey Josh, you don't have to throw the ball every time you get to it) is another story.

I think the authors main point is the advanced stats aren't accounting for it properly. Essentially we are possibly looking at a "decision making skill" which could be evaluated on a normalized basis or specific to situation (runners, personnel, game score, etc)

But errors are included in UZR, unless he's more prone to errors in high leverage situations his error rate would already be accounted for.

Maybe I'm adding too much of my own thoughts on top of the authors (re- decision making), but he pretty clearly states throwing errors aren't being properly accounted for. Maybe it's for a different reason, that he doesn't expand on, but that is his point I believe.
