Crawford checks a number of boxes, it's simply a matter of how expensive he'll be. If they pick up half his deal(or maybe they take Jaxon and chip in 10M in 2017), he's worth an okay prospect probably.

The MLB OBP average was .314 last year.

What is it for LF?

45 LFs had at least 300 PA last year. Crawford ranked 19th in OBP.

If costs are equal, I'd rather have Crawford than Jackson. But I'm hoping for a better bad contract swap.

I can't imagine you'll get a better player than Crawford in a trade that's primarily swapping contracts with Jaxon. Unless that guy is someone you're convinced is going to jump back up in production, a la BJ Upton.

Assuming he's completely healthy, I would love to see the FO work out a Jackson/Victorino trade.

First of all, why?

Second of all, who would be the third team in that deal?

Because Victorino could play CF, would add the veteran presence that the Cubs need, and should be available inexpensively because the Red Sox have a glut of OFs. I don't see a need for any other team to be involved.

Victorino would be fine, but there's no reason to think the Red Sox would be interested in trading him for Jackson. The Sox do have a lot of outfield options, but very little is settled. They may not like Cespedes, Nava may be a fluke, JBJ may be a bust, Betts may be an infielder, and Craig probably can't play OF too much anymore(if he hits). Similarly, the Sox have even more of a back end of rotation glut than the Cubs, and all of their options feature higher upside or more team control than Jackson (or both) to go along with a lower floor. Add in that Victorino's contract isn't much of a burden for them(1 year 13 million), and there's little chance that type of deal could happen.

Avila is basically the LH Castillo(although better regarded as a framer), so I would jump to add him if he did get non-tendered.

Alternatively, the Tigers are a natural trade partner for Castillo if they do this and the Cubs sign Martin.

The Tigers picked up Avila's 5.4 million option today, though he remains potentially on the trading block.

Does Lester, Montero, Crawford and Hammel make this team a potential contender?

This team is a potential contender with less than that, so yeah, of course it would.

I think if you fill the open rotation spots with competent starters (and we've shown a decent ability to do this) alone, it's a potential contender. We can do much better than that, though.

But yeah, if that were to happen, an upgrade at C, one great starter, one decent one, and a decently good OF makes for a pretty damn good offseason.

Without question.

Montero looks real good now after Martin's contract. That's a pretty good team with those 4.

Bill Mueller to be Cardinals asst hitting coach.

Probably wouldn't been too keen to be their 3rd base coach. Awfully close to that signage.

Well done
