Jesus Christ, man. they've beaten the # 7, 11, and 16 teams in the playoff poll with two of those on the road. I don't care how badly their secondary has played the last two games; their offense is now firing on all cylinders. There isn't another 1 loss team or any other team for that matter with three better wins than that right now. They should beat A&M. They will be favored to beat Georgia on the road. Then, they will probably be a slight dog in Tuscaloosa unless Bama craps the bed the next couple of weeks.

Marcus Peters, probably the top CB in the 2015 draft, has been dismissed from Washington. He had previously been suspended for a game by Chris Petersen.

Between Peters' dismissal and injuries in their secondary, Washington will likely start Nate Dogg's son at cornerback against UCLA.

Anyone who argues that a playoff diminishes the regular season must be ignoring the 4-6 games every week that have major playoff implications

Nobody ever thought a four team playoff would diminish the regular season. It's more the 8 team and especially the 16 team that would diminish it.

16 is too much, but I think the regular season matchups between the teams competing for spots would still have a ton of meaning.

That aside, I find that the games this year feel like they have more meaning when the field is 4 instead of 2. If we were in a BCS format right now, the only thing that would matter would be MSST and FSU's games until/unless one of them lost. Now we have several games per week that are impactful and important

And they all involve good teams. When we get to 8, they won't.

the top 8 teams out of 120-whatever are good.

All the games that are made relevant by an 8 teamer will not involve top 8 teams.

that's quite a bar you've set

They definitely do have more meaning. I was as pro-BCS as almost anyone and the only reason I didn't want a four-team playoff was because it will eventually lead to & and then 16. The 4-team playoff is great. You get the extra two games plus one-loss doesn't necessarily kill a team and it still means that going undefeated is the only way to ensure you get a shot to play for a title.

This year has less undefeated teams than typical at this point in the year. Last three years their were 5 undefeated teams in the championship picture at this time. So their games "had meaning" In addition to all the one loss teams with a chance should the unbeaten falter, like Auburns games last year. So no having 4-6 games relevant in the national championship picture has been the norm and is not unique to the 4 team playoff. Stop acting like this thing is giving you something you didn't already have.

The issue I have is that this 4 team thing has completely subsumed college football as it was. In the media or here on this board or anywhere else the only thing that seems to matter anymore is this playoff. How many games this week have conference championship implications? It doesn't matter becaue winning your conference only means something if it can be used to solidify your resume for the playoff.

All this has done has made ESPNs colonization of your college football experience complete. You now only view the sport through the lens of a 4 team playoff. Next year 8. America asked for 8!

Striving for a conference championship is loser talk. If you're good enough to win your conference, you should absolutely have NC aspirations

The most they ever are is background noise outside of the Bulls and Red Wings, so yeah, I'd say they're pretty pointless.

To most people, yes, which is why it will happen. I have this crazy idea that games between 7-3 Wisconsin and 6-4 Iowa (or fill in mediocre teams of your choice here) ought not to have some grand meaning to the national title picture.

I can say with confidence as a Notre Dame fan that I've never rooted for a team that lost more than once that made me think "Damn, it's too bad we can't play for the national championship! We really deserve a shot!"

But it'll happen, to 'make more games relevant', as if I'll be any more likely to watch a mid-tier ACC game just on the off chance that one of the teams involved might win the league and make the playoff.

I don't know if a playoff dillutes the meaning of winning a conference title. Basketball teams still celebrate conference championships and winning one still matters. Weather football goes to a lot of teams in the playoff or they went back to the BCS or even pre BCS system, I'd still enjoy college football.

How often are 3 loss teams competing to be in the top 8?

Auto-bids for the Power 5 (which is an even worse idea, but it's going to happen). They're not expanding to 8 without them. Almost every league has 3-loss teams at least kind of in the race for the title, especially with the unbalanced schedules in the SEC and B1G.

Current leaders:

ACC: 7-1 Duke, 8-0 FSU

B1G: 7-1 MSU/7-1 OSU, 7-1 Nebraska

B12: 7-1 KSU

P12: 8-1 Oregon, 7-1 ASU

SEC: 7-2 Mizzou, 8-0 MSU

Yes, divisional leaders are the only teams in the race for a conference title at this point in the season. Good point.

So some three loss teams pulls off a huge conference upset and then has to make a Cinderella run in order to have national title importance.

I'm okay with that occurring every few years.

I'll learn to live with it, but the inevitable expansion just reeks of CFB trying to be like every other sport, when a big chunk of the reason it's as popular as it is, is exactly because it's not like every other sport. At least, I feel like that's why. Maybe I'm just a moron and people are starving for a 16-team playoff where 5 SEC teams get in and nothing that happens before mid-October matters.

I worry the uniqueness will go away. That's probably more selfish than anything, though.
