Renteria is signed through 2016, but the Cubs could always find another job in the organization for him.

Has a non-interim manager ever taken a demotion in the same organization before? I can't imagine that. And it's not like there's some FO job for him to take.

[expletive], David -- can we get a Sullivan Warning first?

They eventually turned to the little-known Rick Renteria, whose happy talk personal failed to impress the n base.

whether they like renteria or not, it's pretty offensive for sullivan to refer to the cubs' black fans that way

Is there anyone at the Tribune you wouldn't need such a warning for? It's implied.

Gonzales, the Cubs beat writer for the Tribune.

I was told there would be no more Sullivan.

Nah, he sucks too. He doesn't seem annoyingly pompous like the other guys yet, but he's just as meatbally.

The guy who wrote the brilliant Schwarber is finished because he's going to be a catcher instead of an outfielder article is spewing hot takes on Twitter if anyone wants to have some fun.

Just talked to Joe Maddon.

He told me that after Andrew Friedman resigned, he had a two-week window to decide whether to exercise opt-out. He was unaware of specifics until Rays' Matt Silverman informed him.

I asked him specifically about Cubs. He said, "I don't know. I have to talk to people. I have interest everywhere right now. I've got to hear what everyone has to say."

Asked him if he would sit out a year. He said, "I'd love to manage. If the right opportunity does not present itself, I would want to work. But I would hope it would be a managing position. If not, there are other things I can do that would make me an even better manager when I get the opportunity again."

Asked if it was uncomfortable for him to have his agent, Alan Nero, contacting teams with managers already under contract. He said, "For me, it's not my responsibility to think for other organizations. I'm controlling what I can. I had this two-week window of opportunity. It's about myself, my family, my charities. At the end of the day, I would never ask or tell an organization what to do. That's not my business."

Maybe moreso.

It's Sullivan, so I'm not sure if he is trying to be clever or if he actually just doesn't realize that it's "moot".

Bernstein talked to his "Cubs people"

They do intend to talk to him.

Like Rick Renteria very much and would work very hard to retain him in some capacity and wouldn't want to screw him over.

Said something else about whether Maddon want to be more than just a manager and I didn't really understand what he was saying.

#Cubs plan to talk to Maddon. Could still try to retain Renteria in some capacity, if it works.

It's the Cubs way. Hire a GM and call him president then hire an assistant GM and call him GM, then hire a manager to become president of gameday decision making and then call the former manager who is now a bench coach the manager so you can keep a bench coach.

Isn't Maddon's agent reaching out to teams before the season is over (and before he's even exercised his opt-out clause) and teams commenting on if they're interested or not considered tampering? Or does that only apply to players?

Teams haven't directly commented on any interest as far as I can tell. And I haven't seen any report that his agent has reached out to anyone yet, though I might have missed something like that.

Even so, I wouldn't think it would really matter at this point (and hasn't he already exercised his opt out clause, or is it a "will exercise" thing)?

I'm not sure, but the more I think about it, you almost have to think it's slam dunk Maddon is going to the Cubs. I'd assume he would want a different challenge and not go right back to a mid-market or small-market team (save the jokes) and if the Dodgers aren't going to be involved, the Cubs seem like it would be the team.

Sullivan's issue is that he's ALWAYS trying to be clever, but rarely is. It's the former.

Maddon's contract with the Rays may allow for his agent to do some testing of the waters. If so, the Rays would not be able to make a case for tampering.

I'm all for Maddon but really don't want to screw over Renteria. I guess getting millions in a buyout isn't really screwing someone over though... Bring me Maddon.

Given that it's 2 years left of a 3 year contract, I'm not even positive it reaches multiple millions.

Heard Maddon seeking 5-yr, $25M range #Mets never going there for $ reasons. Also not sure Alderson believes mgrs should earn at that level
