Week 2: Bears (0-1 wtf) @ 49ers (1-0) Sun Night 7:30 PM NBC

Vereen (who filled in admirably last night but is a rookie who hasn't played corner since college)

I think I'm missing something here.

Yeah, that comes off a little weird. He played CB last night in the nickel. But it was the first time since college, but he was just in college 6 months ago.

#Bears QB Jay Cutler showed leadership & poise with 0 turnovers vs SF -- a 119.2 passer rating. He's 29-3 when his rating is 100.0 or more

this is so annoying. are these reporters this bad at logic or what the hell is it?

YOU MEAN HIS TEAM WINS A LOT WHEN HE PLAYS REALLY WELL? NO [expletive] KIDDING.

FWIW, the Bears are probably going to have to make another round of at least 3 roster moves.

I'd re-sign Hayden and promote Frey from the practice squad. Both have played full seasons at nickel for the Bears. Let the best man win, though I'd probably be tempted to play Hayden on the outside in the nickel and keep Jennings in the slot. Hayden is pretty slow and I don't really like him covering a guy in space. May need a 3rd CB up if McManis is out for any period of time.

If Conte is hurt for more than 2-3 weeks, probably going to have to find a S, at least for the practice squad. The Bears still have 4 other safeties, but 2 are rookies and 1 is a career special teamer. I'd love Vereen to get a shot to start. McCray is just a dude. Vereen can cover man-to-man so the Bears would be really versatile with him in there.

May have to add a DT to the roster if Ratliff has to miss this week, but I'm guessing he is fine.

I'd cut any and all of Draughn (Perry loses the KR job, but stays on roster because of speed), Washington/Bass (6 DEs on the roster, 3 have no snaps at DE, these 2 have been inactive both weeks), and Greene (also inactive both weeks). Then there's the possibility of IR'ing Tillman, which hopefully they won't have to do but I'm guessing they will.

Fuller might be better than Tillman but Tillman's injury is bad because now the nickel is going to be McMannis (if healthy), Vereen (who filled in admirably last night but is a rookie who hasn't played corner since college) or someone not on the 53 (Frey? Hayden?). And the Bears play a lot of nickel.

Right...same kinda situation as the Garza/De La Puente thing...the replacement might be better at this point, but the depth is hurt.

My understanding is he didn't play corner his senior year at Minnesota, so it's been even longer than just six months.

ETA: Since before his junior year, per minnesotacubfan.

Oh ok. I thought he played some CB last year.

I think he did, but it was really limited. That being said, switching to CB in the NFL after your primary role in college is safety and you were drafted and expected to train as a safety has to be a challenge.

PFF's Bears/Niners ReFo (Bears tidbits only)

https://www.profootballfocus.com/blog/2014/09/15/refo-bears-49ers-week-2/

Chicago Bears – Performances of Note

Brandon Marshall, WR: +1.9

Breakdown: Only five receptions for Marshall last night but he made the most of his matchup with Jimmie Ward in the slot to snag three touchdowns on his four targets against the 49ers’ first-round pick. All three of Marshall’s scores came from the slot into Ward’s coverage as he proved simply too tough an assignment for the young defensive back down in the red zone.

Signature Play: Everybody loves a one-handed touchdown grab and Marshall came up with one to get the Bears back into the game just before the half (Q2, 00:18) getting free from Ward and elevating to bring the ball in with his right hand.

Willie Young, DE: +0.6

Breakdown: Until the 49ers’ final drive this had been a relatively quiet night for Young with a neutral zone infraction one of his few contributions to the game. That changed with a sack on the opening play of that last drive which he repeated, driving to the outside of Jonathan Martin this time, a few plays later to knock the 49ers back toward midfield with three minutes remaining.

Signature Play: Young’s first sack at 6:55 in the fourth came with a drive to the inside of Martin. A tight end and fullback put traffic in Young’s path for an outside rush and he was all too easily able to open the shorter route to Kaepernick for the sack.

Kyle Fuller, CB: +2.4

Breakdown: Filling in for the injured Charles Tillman, the Bears’ first-round pick took on not only his snaps but also his playmaking role in the defense. Fuller snagged a pair of interceptions in the fourth quarter to aid the comeback, displaying a Tillman-esque knack of both finding and fighting for the ball.

Signature Play: If his second interception was about coverage smarts, then Fuller’s first interception (Q4, 13:29) was about grit and determination, not allowing Michael Crabtree to rescue Colin Kaepernick’s wayward throw, Fuller knocked the ball loose and snagged it for the turnover.

PFF Game Ball

Every team loves to see impact plays from their first-round pick and Kyle Fuller fit in just fine taking on snaps from the injured Charles Tillman to ballhawk a pair of interceptions that were pivotal in the Bears’ comeback.

I think we found what was missing.

De La Puente was a stud last night. The line as a whole looked impressive as hell in the 2nd half

Oh hell yes.

I think Mills had a couple mistakes but overall they neutralized SF's pass rush and just gave Cutler everything he needed.

Old but fitting.

Someday it's going to be too ridiculous, and in the wrong time/place. It's going to wind up killing his career, I'm convinced of it.

Probably will be a little like Ditka. Once his teams play out their time at the top, his little act is going to wear very thin.

Could be wrong but I think he picks the Bears every week....or at least in weeks where everyone picks against the Bears, because I've seen this type of thing before.

I wish I could lay into the ESPN experts this week, but I'm shocked at what the Bears did last night. I would have laid way too much money on the 49ers if I was a betting man.

Yeah, this wasn't a case of experts making a collectively/predictably wrong pick (Saints over Bears in NFC Championship).

I was way more confident about this game than it seems most were before Alshon and Marshall were transformed into gimps.

After that, though, I obviously didn't feel great about it.

They put up those stops & turnovers, with solid pressure, after both Tillman and Ratliff went down.

It was unbelievable. 49er fans were like -- whaa?

It was fun to see Kaepernick pulling the ball down on nearly every pass play too because he was expecting to be hit. Man I haven't seen that in so long.

They were transformed into gimps a week before the game.

I realize that.

The schedule has been out for a very long time.

Hub is on the score and *shockingly* is down on the Bears.

Biggest gripe seems to be that they didn't play 60 minutes and the loss was more about the 49ers playing shitty than the Bears playing well.
