I'm intrigued by Jackson for BJ Upton and some 2017 cash. I don't have any specific insight, but his falling apart so quickly upon going to Atlanta makes me think there's something that can be fixed.

I have no interest in Upton, he's been so bad the last 2 years. I'd rather just keep Jackson and hope he figures it out if Upton is the best we can do

You have to remember what's being traded away here. If you want to talk bWAR(maybe more appropriate for Jackson), Jackson has been worse than Upton with their new teams. So your options are accept nothing in hopes of getting some salary relief, or find a much worse contract that you take on more of.

Haha. I completely agree, but it's still funny considering that everyone who has ever employed Jaxon has thought he also could be fixed.

Also an option. Not one I'm particularly fond of with the depth of similar caliber players(many with age/team control/recent performance on their side) already in the mix for next year, but if Atlanta wants us to pay both contracts or something silly like that, you aren't *forced* to trade him.

well, the "control" aspect of those other guys really doesn't matter in the debate about what to do with Jackson.

If you have similar expectations for the short term between Jackson and some alternative, it's probably better to prioritize that alternative if they have more team control. Especially since control also means that they're of an age that is more desirable for short and long term production(Wada excluded).

I fail to see how the control aspect of that is meaningful at all. Their age, sure. Maybe they have more upside, but control is meaningless for that discussion.

Because if there's no difference in what you expect this year, then in deciding which you prefer, the following years are important. A large part of it is age, but if you forecast X WAR for Jackson the next 2 years and X WAR for Straily the next 2 years, there's no reason to prefer Jackson when you know Straily is also an option for years 3 and 4 too.

With the signing of Castillo, the Red Sox have OFs Cespedes, Betts, Bradley, Craig, Castillo, and Victorino all signed through next year (along with Napoli and Ortiz as 1B/DH). I wonder if they would take Jackson + cash for Victorino. Victorino is owed $13 million for next year, while Jackson is owed $11 million for 2015 and 2016. Hell, I'd be willing to throw in the $11 million for 2016 just to get rid of Jackson. The Red Sox would save $2 million next year and have Jackson for nothing in 2016, while we would add a veteran presence who can play any OF position.

Victorino has a real injury to blame for his struggles this year, and they have no incentive to take on a pitcher of Jackson's caliber with so many similar internal options(Buchholz, De La Rosa, Workman, Webster, Kelly, Ranaudo). I'd be really interested if they were willing to trade away Bradley, but the problem is the Red Sox have money and depth, so it's hard to come up with a trade that they'll clearly be interested in.

I was looking at it as the Red Sox saving $2 million plus making room for youngsters to play. Obviously nobody wants the 2014 version of Jackson, but he might be a someone who might benefit from a change of scenery. Also, the Cubs would be taking on some risk with a 34 year old coming off back surgery.

Someone may be willing to take a chance on Jackson bouncing back, but that team is almost certainly not the Red Sox, who like the Cubs have an abundance of good back end SP options. Moreover, if the Red Sox wanted to trade Victorino for cash savings(questionable), they could find a team that could save them more than 2 million and wouldn't need to take on a longer dead-weight contract in return.

Change of scenery? Isn't 9 teams and counting enough? He's no good.

That's such an overused reason to hate on Jaxon. Sure, he wasn't very good early in his career with the Dodgers and Rays, but he had a stretch of 3 straight years with a 3+ WAR followed by a 2+ win season. He hasn't been on a ton of teams because he's bad.

That said, I would take Ethier or Upton for him because CF might still be open for 2015. I'd prefer Ethier though.

Isn't Ethier an abysmally bad defender in CF?

Surprisingly, no he's not. Just slightly below average. UZR hasn't been too fond of his RF defense in the past though.

Just thought of an interesting guy we could deal Jaxon for straight up. $13 million on his contract next year, with a $13 million vesting option for 2016. Still pitching well, although the reason he'll be available is behavior issues. But then he has a connection with our front office and no history (that I'm aware of) of behavior issues before this year. The deal-breaker will be whether he's willing to move out of the 9th.

I'm talking of course about Jonathan Papelbon.

Hard to see the Phillies trading Papelbon, an effective closer making 1/13(or 2/26 if he's awesome next year), for Jaxon and his 2/22 deal. Even if the incident ruined Papelbon in Philadelphia, they'd get better offers than Jaxon.
