if the ball is dead when he flips into the dugout why should anyone be able to advance a base. seriously, wtf

 

I still think it's dumb as a blanket rule, but:

 

@LenKasper: The rule works for this reason--eliminates intentionally going out of play as defender to "kill" play. Base is given to runners as result

 

What's the actual rule? I wanted to show it to a friend I was discussing it with today.

If the player has to physically reach over a railing to have any chance of catching a foul ball and falls on his ass, the rule should not apply. Suck it, Bud.

catching and carrying the ball out of play is basically the same as if you had thrown it out of play-dead ball and all the runners get 1 base.
