The dude that broke the news about Sharp being on the trade block was on 670 today. He said that if the Hawks offer Sharp (and maybe a couple of mid-round picks) for Kesler, Vancouver would probably take that deal.

I'm all for that. Sharp's obviously a good winger but Kesler solves your biggest deficiency. Plus, you wouldn't have to give up Saad or Teuvo either.

I have noticed that some PR issues with Sharp have come up in the last couple of days. Seems like standard McDonough work, before a popular player can be moved, he needs to be demonized.

what were these issues?

I've been calling Sharp the best trade bait for a few years now.

fight with teammate and something else. It's mostly internet stuff. Here is a link at the Committed Indian that speculates on some of the issues http://thecommittedindian.com/exit-interviews-patrick-sharp/

I would love for the Wings to acquire Sharp, but do not think we have the pieces the Hawks would want to get him. Though we do have several cheap centers who have played in the NHL and could possibly play 2nd line, my guess is the Hawks would want more. And I would be hesitant to give up too much

I agree with the guys at C.I. that Sharp alone doesn't make that much sense for Vancouver. The notion that he isn't really a loyal family man doesn't surprise me; the altercation in the locker room does; I agree he played poorly in the playoffs and did little to nothing defensively, but that could be said about other forwards on the team as well (I spent half the playoffs screaming for back-checking).

@BrianHedger: Re: Patrick Sharp: I'd be absolutely stunned if #Blackhawks trade him, based on good info from "a source" and what Bowman told his agent.

Patrick Sharp's agent, Rick Curran, says that Stan Bowman has assured him that Sharp will NOT be traded. #Blackhawks

Dreaded vote of confidence

It's believed Kane-Toews initial ask of CHI on extension is around $12M/yr each. They'll end up lower but still could be $10M+ AAV players.

Well crap. $10m AAV is a freaking lot under this cap.

12 million would be pretty crushing. you have to do it if that's what it takes, but jesus. even 10 is high.

I think the final deal will be 8 years 11 mil per. 88 is a number Kane likes.

Cap will continue to rise won't look so bad in a few years.

Is it still AAV for cap or can you structure so the hit is later in the deal?

How are they preventing the deals with five extra years tacked on the end at league minimum?

they void them and take away draft picks and fine you and stuff.

Are there set criteria or is it subjective?

Cap increase or not, I don't see how you pay two players an AAV of $10 mill without divesting yourself of Hossa, Sharp, Seabs, are some combination thereof.

during the last CBA they included an agreement to limit contracts to seven years (8 if player stays with current team) and does something about the year-to-to structure. No clue about the specifics.

My understanding is that average annual salary of the whole contract counts against the cap even if the player retires unless they get Prongered.

I am pretty sure this is the case. Wings fans are very nervous about Franzen and Zetterberg for this reason.

It's a little more complicated than that, there's this whole weird formula. But basically, yeah, a guy retiring in the middle of a long contract leaves you with a dead cap hit that you don't want. Blackhawks may have to worry about it with Hossa.
