It's really [expletive] simple. 1) Manny can provide serious value in mentoring Javy or whoever. Doubtful that Sammy has the want to do that.

2)More important-PTR holds nothing against Manny. His crimes weren't against the Cubs. In his mind, Sammy's are, or else he'd have been back long ago.

I know why they're different. I just think it's stupid.

Here's the key part of Theo's statement and how the team is positioning giving Manny a chance when Sammy was denied: "Manny has made real mistakes in the past but he has owned up to them and moved his life in a positive direction the last couple of years. He is in a really great place right now and wants to share the lessons he's learned along the way."

Sammy seems to be in a really great place right now.

Rich and loving life?

I love Manny for all he is. Regardless of the 'roids, dude was the greatest "pure hitter" of his generation (his swing was so sweet and stayed in the zone forever) and he never took himself too seriously. I love him and am glad to have him around.

I do see the point re the Sammy comparison, but I guess I don't care that much.

Sammy was a slugger, Manny was a hitter. Sammy does not owe the Cubs anything, but at the same time I don't think he has much value as a coach or mentor.

I don't think anyone here really wants Sammy as a couch in terms of expecting him to actually be able to coach well; just that it seems like a way to work him back in.

Sammy should be the figurehead leader of the Dominican Academy who sails up on his yacht with the check from PTR to try and close the IFA signings.

I for one think he would be a terrible couch.

Plus, no way Ricketts is allowed to add another couch to the renovation project with those [expletive] rooftop owners & Tunney.

Look, I've had it. If Sammy wants to be a [expletive] couch, instead of a Cub, he can be a [expletive] couch. He's a grown [expletive] man and capable of making that decision on his own. Hell, maybe he'll even surprise us and be a sectional, WITH a Cubs logo. Win-win, folks.

Guys, look at the couch in the picture; Sammy clearly has class and taste and has learned from the best how to be the best couch he can be.

Class and taste aren't gonna help Javy lay off the sliders down and away. It still hints at him being a couch that's got me-me written on all the under cushions.

does the couch become a bed that your friends can sleep on if they get wasted and pass out at your house?

I know we're frustrated. Desperation has crept in. But is there even a single study out there that shows a positive effect on a baseball team, by introducing the [expletive] Sumo culture?

I question the bat speed needed and while obvious, I guess it needs to be said- They'll clog up the base paths if by some chance they ever get on.

Sammy the sofa needs to be introduced as some other type of furniture altogether, in my opinion.

I had a really old broken down couch I could have donated to the Cubs if they really needed more. It was broken down but damn if it wasn't comfortable. I miss it. Stupid firm new couches.

A big difference between Sammy and Manny is that this is Theo's decision. Sammy has nothing to do with baseball operations and is up to Ricketts.

Another obvious difference is that Manny is connected to Boston (Epstein) and Sammy is connected to Chicago (Hendry and the old regime).
