ffs, a team's local broadcasters are supposed to be homers. they're not catering to a national or even impartial audience. they're catering specifically to fans of the team they broadcast for and are employed by.

It really depends on what you mean by homer. I always say a local team's announcers should be like the guy that if you got a group of fans together would be the most rational one. They are definitely rooting for the team and they focus most of their commentary on that team, but they recognize the opponents strengths and weaknesses and don't get too high or too low as the game continues. They get upset with the referees occasionally, but they're not going on and on about calls every other game. Their initial reaction to a call might be a little biased to the team, but on replay they try to look at it with objective eyes and admit when their team gets a break along when they get a bad call against them.

There are a few announcers out there who act like the slightly drunk fan who refuse to give the opponents respect and tend to think that every 50/50 call has to go for them. From all I've heard, Heinsohn in Boston is a great example of this, although there are others. Some people might like that type of announcer, but I find it irritating to listen to even if you root for that team, and borderline unwatchable if you're neutral or rooting for the other team.

That's boring IMO

homerism is fun

where hawk fails is in that he's a [expletive] idiot

not that stacey is a rhodes scholar or something

They're one in the same. King actually used to be a pretty good analyst, but now he's a caricature of himself.

What the heck is fun about it? When I think homers I think Yankees and White Sox broadcasts and they are awful. There's nothing fun about an announcer that is detached from reality and incapable of providing rational and accurate descriptions of play.

Stacey King doesn't provide inaccurate analysis, and he's critical of Bulls players when they make mistakes. He's is over the top when something good happens.

I have noticed that his criticism of Bulls players has actually grown the last couple of years, but he's still a tough watch for me.

those things are a result of being dumb

i want my local broadcasters celebrating good [expletive] and being as excited as me. that's fun. i also don't want them sounding excited when the other team does good stuff. that's annoying.

My issue with the Bulls guys is that they seemingly disagree with every call against the Bulls and don't acknowledge when the other team has made a nice play. They shouldn't sound excited (I hate that) but they also need to call the damned game.

To me, a "homer" announcer is one who can't give the other team credit and is insistent that the refs are out to get the home team. Get excited when the team wins? Get disappointed when the other team makes a great play? Please do.

Yes.

For the PBP especially I'm okay with someone who's pretty detached except for in the most intense of situations like a game tying shot. For color guys I'm okay with a little homer flair on something like a big dunk (Stacey's "posters" don't bother me as an example) but then I expect a step back so actual analysis can be given on why something happened, whether it was positive or negative.

Also Stacey needs to not force nicknames. Pasta was one of the worst in recent memory (get it cuz he's Italian!)

Huh, I guess I'll watch for that, but I feel like they do a good job of pointing out that the Bulls "got away with one" when a call isn't made correctly, or saying "you just can't foul in that situation" when the Bulls foul in a dumb spot. And I really can't think of any "the refs are out to get the Bulls" type comments from either Funk or King, but it's definitely possible I've just not seen it....I'm not the most diligent regular season viewer.

Fully agree here. And he could stand to change up a few. He should've let the "hotsauce" go when Korver left, imo. He pulled out a "does anyone know how to post videos to facebook" last night...when I barely remember the original commercial he's referencing now.

Wait, seriously? OK well then he has to work on his timing then because yeah that was like 3 years ago and no one talks about it anymore.

Stacey's performance in the 2008 bulls celtics series was the GOAT for a local color man.
