What's also sad and makes this all the more maddening is looking at the pictures from the players on the field yesterday. IIRC, every Cubs great but one out there was 60 years old or more (Hawk the youngest). The one link between 1992 and today out there was Ryne [expletive] Dempster?!? I realize Kerry would have been great to see, but Dempster is the best they could do? Not even one clip of Sammy in the intro video. Unbelievable.

I'm having a really hard time caring about this at all. Was the 100th anniversary a big deal in Chicago? I haven't seen or read or heard anyone talking about it anywhere except here and then only afterwards.

Has anyone considered the possibility that they invited Sosa and he told the Cubs to go pound sand? That would explain why he wasn't there and why PoorTomRicketts didn't say much about it.

That would seem to go against just about everything we know about Sosa

A few beat writers tweeted yesterday that Sosa wasn't invited.

It was all over ESPN yesterday. It was mentioned on local news in NYC. It was on nj.com, which is a collective of a bunch of New Jersey newspapers. I saw it referenced on NBC Sportsnet. It was trending on twitter.

Yes, it got press. How much anybody actually cared doesn't really matter, it was a sports story that received attention

And as others have noted, the idea that Sosa was invited and told them to pound sand does not add up.

I think Ricketts would have let everyone know they invited Sosa if he had turned them down, just to avoid the PR hit. Probably could've have gotten some of the Sammy haters on board.

Obviously Grace and Sandberg would be included in Cub greats by couldn't attend for various reasons.

Maybe Derrick Lee, or Prior (probably a stretch, didn't last long but he was an important part for that short time) from that era to go along with Wood.

I don't think you can call Dempster, Aram, or Alou Cub greats.

Aramis Ramirez was a better Cub than Lee. He is the best Cub since Sosa.

ARam is easily one of the best Cubs players in the modern era.

but he is busy playing right now, that's what I meant by not including him

Alou was also a great player but I think of him with other teams more than as a cub. Same with Dempster, although I don't think of him as necessarily a great.

Have any of you heard or care about the things/attitude Sammy has now? The dude is nuts. He calls for his own statue.

I loved him as much as any Cub fan, but I have ZERO problem with him being stiff-armed, until he has a shred of humility and changes his whole personality.

I don't really care that SF has welcomed Bonds back, or that McGwire is now a respected hitting coach and pushing around a crippled Kirk Gibson - Sosa and his ilk are crap. They are terrible role models for our kids, and a disgrace to the game. It was enough for Sandberg to backhand him in his HOF acceptance speech, and any Cub that I respect has little respect for Sosa. Kudos to the Cubs organization for taking out the trash.

I can't believe I'm obviously the only person on 4 pages saying this.

Anyone who pretends like any pro athlete is an acceptable role model should be laughed at. Yes, son. Idolize and emulate Mark Grace.

That is a very good point. Not realistic, but very true.

I loved Sammy. I really did. I wish I could get over it.

Maybe you should contemplate that fact.

Likewise.

Okay, I have contemplated the fact that your statement stood out like a sore thumb and have dismissed it as the rantings and ravings of an unhinged lunatic.

Hey son, you see that guy, he played his hardest to help the team for 13 years, led them to the playoffs twice, and made the franchise as popular as it's ever been. But he might have taken some drugs to make his performance even better and for this, for this we must forget he even existed. Do you understand son?

What the [expletive] are you talking about dad?

I'd give Sosa 2 statues. Tear down Carey's to make room

Didn't want to list every reason why each player shouldn't be invited as a cub great.

The ones I mentioned as possibilities for the "under 60 crowd" of possible greats are all finished as players. I also didn't get into to why Grace was "busy" when mentioned with Sandberg, it's clearly a different reason than Ryno managing.

For the record, as Cubs:

Lee posted a .298 .378 .524 .903. with an average of 25.5 hr

Aram .294 .356 .531 .887 with an average of 26.5 hr

Lee 22.5 war over 7 seasons or 3.2 per season

Aram 23.8 war over 9 seasons or 2.6 per season

I will give you that almost of the War was from 2005 when Lee was incredible. I still have to say that it Aram is not "hands down" the best cubs since Sosa.

Sammy taking steroids was not illegal nor was it against baseball rules.

You can walk into a Dominican "Walgreen's" and buy it off the shelf.

Unethical maybe, but when most of the league, and most of other sports are using it, it's hard to point to Bonds, Sosa and McGwire as bad people (at least because of that).

Its funny how the way you(or the press) feel about a player changes your perception.

Bonds fights with Kent, and he's a bad teammate.

Jordan punches Kerr and he's competitive.

Griffey, Jr and Nomar are great guys and no way they could juice-Despite muscles being torn off bones, which is a huge symptom of steroids.

But Arod, Sosa, Clemens and Bonds are in court and senate hearings over sports/steroids.

I happen to know a guy who got steroids from Nomar, or says he did. It is what it is, all are guilty by association. PED use was defended by the Players Union, and owners turned a blind eye. It was the culture of the game.

It's a shame what the game has become.
