Got a feeling Illinois is going to be on the wrong side of the bubble this year. Bad week to lose 2 of 3.

The field of 64: http://www.baseballamerica.com/college/road-to-omaha-ncaa-announces-field-of-64/

Clemson was likely the last team in; Illinois wasn't even listed as one of the last 4 out (though they probably have as good a case for making the tournament as Clemson).

The national seeds are: 1. Oregon State, 2. Florida, 3. Virginia, 4. Indiana, 5. Florida State, 6. Louisiana-Lafayette, 7. TCU and 8. LSU. 10 SEC and 7 ACC teams made the tournament. In a down year in the west, there were only two regional hosts in the west - Corvallis, OR and San Luis Obispo, CA (Cal Poly SLO) - which led to 2 seeds like Oregon going to Nashville, Long Beach State going to Gainesville, FL and Washington going to Oxford, MS.

Jackson State University just beat the no.1 team in the country, Univ of Louisiana-Lafayette. Proof that their 53-7 record was smoke and mirrors on account of not playing anyone.

btw, the 1-0 shutout for JSU was the first time they shutout ANY team 1-0 since 1981.

This was indeed the biggest upset in the history of the NCAA baseball tournament. #269 RPI beating #5 RPI

ULL is overrated but there's no need to overstate their ranking. They are the 6th overall seed, I can't imagine even one of the numerous polls (even the ones that no one pays attention) to had them #1.

ESPN was referring to them as #1 all night.

Mea culpa. Apparently BA had them #1 in their final rankings, which is a joke. Heck, I think being the 6th best team in the country (by national seeds) is overrating them. Does anyone really believe they're better than TCU, LSU or even non-national seeds like South Carolina, Ole Miss and Vandy?

Certainly not me. They are a joke. They only have wins against two teams that are in the tourney, Alabama and LSU. Alabama isn't all that great this year (they got shutout by Kennesaw State today) and their victory over LSU was in a midweek game.

The Ole Miss regional is in the same bracket as the ULL regional. There is a bit of drama brewing out of the bracket because Mississippi State has to play Jackson State tomorrow and should they win (hard to imagine JSU winning that game) then they'll be in a good position to win the ULL regional. Assuming that Ole Miss wins our regional, then there would be a Super Regional series in Oxford with Ole Miss vs. Mississippi State. This is a state that has a deadly serious rivalry between the two schools and a state that loves college baseball and is very involved with it. It's gonna be a madhouse if that happens.

We have Washington, GA Tech, and Jacksonville State in our regional. What's your take on Washington?

They've got a decent offense (Trevor Mitsui is probably their hitter), play good defense and two really good starting pitchers. They sent their ace today against Georgia Tech so they'll probably have RHP Jake Brigham tomorrow. He's a good sinker ball/low 90s guy - a bit inconsistent at times but when he's on, he looks like a first rounder. They kind of have a feel of a good team across the board but nothing really stands out.

No games were played today actually due to rain. Thanks for the info about them.

Holy isht, #3 Florida just lost to College of Charleston. Wow.

#5 Florida State also lost tonight. Beaten 7-0 by Georgia Southern.

FYI, College of Charleston is definitely not a traditional 4 seed - they're at worst a 3 seed (and I even saw one projection where they were a 2). They got stuck in Florida as a 4 because of some BS that the committee wanted to keep them close but didn't want them in South Carolina's regional.

FSU... that was surprising. They normally choke once they get to Omaha. :)

Ahh, well... If they switch up their rotation for some reason, their ace is a mid-80s control guy. Great results, knows how to get guys out at this level.

They are planning on throwing their Saturday starter (who is apparently their ace) against GA Tech. So I guess I'm glad we will miss him. I think this Rebel team is poised to make a run because they have two legitimate aces. Chris Ellis is at 9-1, 2.17 and southpaw Christian Trent is at 8-0, 2.44.

Gonna be a fascinating matchup today in Charlottesville, pitching wise, with Kirby going against Killian. Wouldn't be all that shocking if both were first rounders next year. The fact that Artie Lewicki came through (after struggling against Maryland last weekend) really set things up pitching wise for UVA, with the bullpen largely rested. Still, Killian's tough, and UVA's vaunted offense never really came through all year (partly injuries, partly guys just struggling, for lack of a better way to state it). That said, UVA has their 2nd best starter in the wings (Waddell), and Sborz is likely available.

FSU lost again to Alabama and is out of their home Super Regional after going 0-2.

And Florida is down 5-1 in the 8th... I have to think two national seeds being eliminated on the second day of the tournament is unprecedented.

ETA: Heh, Florida eliminated.

TCU and Sam Houston State are all tied up and heading to the 21st inning. It's 1:45 in Fort Worth.

ETA: Game ended in 22!

In the South Carolina-Campbell game, South Carolina tried a hit and run with a runner on 1st. Batter swung and missed and the runner got caught in a rundown and was tagged out, but the umps called the batter out on batter interference and returned the runner to 1st. After a lengthy discussion between the Campbell coach and the home plate ump, all of the umpires have run off the field to go check the rule book.

College baseball, never change.

EDIT: They returned the runner to first and the batter got a strike. The umps had to call the NCAA head of umpires. Apparently that's the correct call and could have been procured in a 5 second Google search instead of a 10+ minute delay. Campbell is now playing the game under protest (daggum right they gon' protest).

Benches clear between Miami and Texas Tech. Texas Tech 1B tagged Miami baserunner hard and the runner fell over in the collision. The 1B then dropped the ball on the baserunner (clearly intentionally) and the Miami 1B coach took exception to it. Miami 1B coach and Texas Tech's coach were face-to-face and definitely made things worse.

For all that teeth gnashing about Louisiana-Lafayette, they're one of only three national seeds to advance to the Supers, along with Virginia and TCU. Oregon State is only the second #1 overall seed to go down in the regionals (the other was Vandy in 2007 with David Price, Pedro Alvarez and Ryan Flaherty).

@heathradio: Oregon State losing means only 7 NCAA baseball regional #1 seeds reach week 2. National seeds 1, 2, 4, 5 and 8 - all gone. That's just nuts.

Unfortunately all 3 of the remaining National Seeds are on Ole Miss' side of the bracket.

We're gonna take out ULL. Props to them for coming out of the losers bracket like that, but no team deserves to go to the College World Series if they lose a home game to freaking Jackson State University.

IU loses as the visiting team on a walk off HR on our own field. Back-to-back days one of my teams gets eliminated at home in a do or die game on a walk off. Life is awesome!

Ole Miss very well might be the better team but it's a short series and anything can happen. I mean, Fresno State won it all in 2008.
