I think it's reasonable to assume the Bears won't be picking the BPA. They haven't done that at all the last 2 years. I'm going to also assume that I'll be pretty upset with whatever choice Emery makes because he's the hipster GM come draft time.

bpa doesn't mean blindly take mel kiper's highest rated available player

No, but Emery's been so far off the board the last 2 years that I can understand the sentiment. I was fine with the Long pick, but it wasn't exactly a guy who was at the top of the list of guys expected to be picked in that spot. And everybody agrees on how awful the Shea pick was.

So...he's 1 for 2. The horror.

I think the hybrid defense the Bears are going to is basically going to allow Emery (a scout turned GM) to use his ability to scout players of all types and then find a way to fit them in the defense.

Basically, the need to draft a 6'2", 295lb 3-technique, or a DE that has to be 6'5", 270, or a MLB that has to be Brian Urlacher or fail. Instead of drafting a 3-4 OLB and making him a DE (McClellin), the team can stand him up like a 3-4 OLB, give him the same responsibilities he's used to, but play a typical 4-3 elsewhere on the DL and behind him.

In this draft especially, after Clowney and Ealy, there's not much that would "fit" in the Lovie Smith 4-3 at DE. After those 2 you have a bunch of undersized DEs. So, if the Bears want to improve the edge rush, they better get Ealy or find a way to fit one of those other guys.

Basically this philosophy opens up the full draft pool as a "fit" for the defense.

LM: #Bears have signed CB Derricus Purdy; Texas Southern product went undrafted last year.

A turn through the Google Machine doesn't show that Purdy even went to an NFL training camp last year. A curious, intriguing depth signing.

Signed as a UDFA with someone, but never went to camp.

I still think Jimmy Clausen can turn it around!

Wtf is a hipster GM. Someone shop some skinny jeans and handlebar stache on Emery pls

A hipster GM, is somebody who thinks hes smarter then everybody else taking the more obscure player. Kinda like your hipster buddy liking the really obscure bands that nobody knows or the lesser known craft beers.

Hell, Emery's already got the thick black frames.

Trestman did tell reporters was that Chicago is going to make May's draft a "defense-oriented" operation that angles to add bodies to a unit that finished last in sacks and 30th in points allowed.

Trestman confirmed Thursday that Shea McClellan will move from that position (DE) to linebacker in 2014.

I can't see Shea @ LB being successful. Feel free to prove me wrong.

I can't see Shea @ LB being worse than Shea @ DE.

Do you want us to prove to you that you actually can see him being successful, or do you want him to prove to you that he can be successful?

I don't have high hopes for the experiment, partially because I don't see anything resembling top end defensive coaching available to Shea. But I can see it working out.

It's a last ditch effort to see what, if anything, you can get out of him.

I wanted Shea at LB the day they drafted him. Still, a huge draft mistake by Emery. Angelo got fired for missing on his number one pics. Emery better improve.

He's 1 for 2 on first rounders. Angelo got 5 drafts before he got the heave-ho.

I meant that I wouldn't mind if the Bears/Shea prove me wrong on it.

It's the last gasp for what appears to be a big 1st round miss (as Banedon said).

So ultimately it rules out Louis Nix for the 14th pick due to the Bears sticking to a 1 gap scheme.

My guess is it's down to DT Timmy Jernigan, CB Justin Gilbert or LB CJ Mosley. I think it would be too early for DE Kony Ealy.

I won't be surprised if Ealy isn't there at 14.

I saw that but apparently Emery said he wanted to the D to get bigger.

I'd rather have Ealy than Jernigan or Gilbert. Don't think he'll be a reach at 14.
