Zac Rosscup's K/9 has reached 14. Send him to Iowa, what more does he have to do?

And have Cabrera come with him while we're on the subject.

The Southern League's All-Star game is on the 17th. Cabrera, Hendricks, Szczur and Alcantara all made the squad (among others). Perhaps they're waiting until then before they make any promotions. Still leaves no explanation for Rosscup...

Is Soler a better prospect than Alcantara? Defend your answer.

We'll see what Soler does in August and in the fall league. Right now, I still say no.

I'm not saying there isn't a good argument for Alcantara moving up the prospect lists, but when your "what have you done for me lately" comes while a guy is recovering from a freak injury, that's a little rough.

There's just this moment when you realize Alcantara has a better slash line, at a higher level, in a better pitcher's league, while playing a more difficult position, while being half a year younger.

To be fair, Soler very well could be at AA right now if it wasn't for the injury. he also has a significantly lower K rate, a higher power projection, and more defensive consistency to date. There's definitely an argument that he's the safer pick, considering Alcantara has defensive issues and is currently striking out at over a 22% rate. You could definitely make an argument either way, though, and Alcantara could easily be at AAA soon, or maybe even in the majors come September.

the only way you can make a case for alcantara over soler right now is if you're basing everything off soler's numbers this season, which is pointless for a lot of reasons. we've gotten just glimpses of soler so far, and they've been after long layoffs. if you had him in our top 3 when we initially signed him, then you can't drop him based on his performance so far. the reason he's universally considered better is because he was so highly regarded in IFA and got a 30 million dollar contract. alcantara has beenvery impressive for his age and level, but it's going to take more than 3 months of an .830 ops to surpass soler.

It's tough to predict before 8/1 (the date a player has to be at AA for AFL eligibility purposes; only 1 player below AA is allowed per team).

If I had to guess:

RHP Dae-Eun Rhee

RHP Barret Loux

RHP AJ Morris

RHP Tony Zych/Trey McNutt/Marcus Hatley (pick one)

IF Logan Watkins

OF Jorge Soler

OF Jae-Hoon Ha or Junior Lake

Dallas Beeler and Kyler Burke (if he's on an AA roster) are other possibilities as guys in the upper levels who has missed most of the season injured (if they get healthy soon).

I picked Ha because he missed time with injury but in hindsight, so did Junior Lake and he could use more reps since he's converting to (at least part time) OF.

ETA: That was surprisingly hard.

Is the Southern League a better pitcher's league than the FSL? I always thought nothing came close to the FSL in terms of favoring pitchers.

Historically the FSL is a bigger pitcher's league: http://www.baseballamerica.com/today/minors/season-preview/2013/2614870.html

Also, the link indicates Tennessee is home to the most hitter friendly stadium (admittedly in a pitcher-friendly league).

This inspired me to look up Alcantara's home/away splits for this year:

Home: .248/.326/.431 (.757 OPS)

Away: .309/.380/.522 (.902 OPS)

Interesting

The FSL has a higher OPS this year. I couldn't believe how low the SL average was.

Haha, what the hell:

@TommyBirch: Weird moment as #IowaCubs OF Jae-Hoon Ha lines a ball into right, stands at home confused, and gets thrown out at 1st, 9-3. Umm? #Cubs #PCL

Do you think one of the reasons Baez was brought up to AA was to make sure he and Soler could both play in the AFL?

I doubt that'd be much of a reason behind his promotion. If they put him in AA, it's because they thought he had mastered A+.

They could have waited till closer to August 1st if that was a deciding factor in his promotion.

Baez played AFL last year and got hurt. Doubt they are sending him back there. Zych and Hatley played AFL last year too, I believe. Not sure what the track record is for sending guys twice, especially in back-to-back seasons.

I'd like to see Ha, Soler, Watkins, maybe a starter or 2 and 2 relievers that potentially could help out on the ML team next year.

Zych did go last year, Hatley didn't. Hatley and McNutt went two years ago.
