Never change WSI

The Cubs manager is a low life *******. He brought in a left handed pitcher to face Dunn in the ninth inning when his team was up by 6 runs and there was already one out in the inning. He obviously was rubbing it in the White Sox face by doing something like that. After he gets fired by the Cubs somewhere down the line, I'll be glad to see him in the unemployment line.

On a different and somewhat odd note, what was the deal with Garza strutting on to the field during the first inning while the game was in progress thus holding up the game. At the risk of sounding like Hawk, "in all my years watching this game, I have never seen that before." When he did finally get out there in the bottom of the inning, he took something like 3 min to throw his first pitch to De Aza. Very odd behavior from their ace.

because your team was playing games.

CHICAGO -- Cubs pitcher Matt Garza wasn't pleased that the White Sox gave him short notice of a new start time after a rain delay pushed back the beginning of Monday night's game between the clubs.

"They gave me 20 minutes to get loose," Garza said after the Cubs' 8-2 victory. "If anything that's their fault. They ran in at 7:15 p.m. and told us we were starting at 7:30 p.m. and we had to argue and say 'can't even have time to get loose.' "

The announced 7:30 start time was quickly pushed back to 7:40 but that still wasn't enough time. As the Cubs batted in the first inning, Garza was seen walking with pitching coach Chris Bosio from the Cubs bullpen behind the right field wall, to the dugout, stopping play as they strolled.

"That's just them trying to rush," Garza continued. "I'm not going to mess up my system just because they want to rush me to the mound. It was a make-up game, it's not like it was Game 7 and we were delayed 3-4 times."

"oh boy seven runs! castro and rizzo must be killing it"

I was at the Yankees game and did the same thing while checking my phone on the way out.

I picture Theo and Jed right now fielding calls saying: "Can I help you? Oh, you're calling about Matt? Hold on, the other line is ringing".

Rinse, repeat.

And then they hang up and extend him.

Garza is Feldman with better stuff and the same results. Let's let someone else pay for his stuff and name, probably fill a rotation spot for several years, then go get next year's Feldman for half the price and be way better off.

There's not an endless line of Feldmans waiting to sign cheap 1 year deals. Cost certainty and not having to sign 3 starting pitchers per offseason matters.

There's not an endless line of them, and I'm not sure how many of them are going to keep wanting to sign those deals with Chicago knowing they are only signing them so they can trade for a prospect at the deadline.

There's a lot of room between a decent SP signing a 1/5 deal and what Garza will command to keep long term. We've already seen two other examples in Maholm and Villanueva. I can't agree if you think that value isn't repeatable.

Besides, the point of trading Garza is increasing rotation certainty. It sounds like they're asking for a guy who can plug into the rotation next year at the latest(and therefore for the next 5 years) plus possibly more. If they got Webster and Ranaudo for him you've filled his spot plus added more options for future seasons that don't require fishing for FAs. And on top of that, there's nothing keeping them from going after Garza in Free Agency if they really wanted to.

I want no part of Garza's next contract. He's a fly ball pitcher with an extensive injury history and a lot of innings.

Which I'm totally fine with, but that doesn't jibe with what you said about letting somebody else pay for Garza, we can just keep signing mid-level guys.

The front office has been very good at finding those guys, but I don't think it's something you can count on year in year out. If you're serious about trying next year, you want to have some certainty as to what a guy's going to do and not say hey this guy has really good peripherals but hasn't put it together on the field, let's sign him and watch your season tank because the guy still sucks.

There's being a believer in the front office and there's putting unrealistic expectations on them to consistently find undervalued assets every offseason.

Well yeah, I don't think Garza is really worth the investment. His performance aside from 2011 isn't better than a Feldman or a Wood, which combined with his age, recent injuries, and asking price doesn't do much to inspire me. I'd be surprised if the FO decided to make that investment in him, but there's nothing keeping them from doing so by trading Garza now.

I'm not talking about grabbing 3 of those guys every offseason. In the hypothetical above you've already got Shark/Jackson/Wood/Webster/Villanueva/Arrieta/Ranaudo without adding anyone. By adding Feldman/Maholm 3.0 you have the flexibility to trade(or backfill) Villanueva, move Arrieta to the pen, give Ranaudo a full 200 IP at AAA, etc. It's depth, not the linchpin of the pitching staff or the key to the offseason.
